According to paperwork filed with the office of the Oregon Secretary of State, Stauffer's career experience includes working as an environmental engineer.

Prior to his work as an engineer, Stauffer worked as a securities analyst for the Oregon Division of Finance and Corporate Securities. He has also worked as an adjunct professor at a number of colleges and universities in Oregon, including the University of Portland and the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College.[1] Stauffer is a retired attorney.[2]

Stauffer ran for governor of Oregon in the 2016 special election to complete the term of Governor John Kitzhaber (D), who resigned in February 2015 and was replaced by Kate Brown (D). In addition to Brown and Stauffer, four other candidates filed to run in the Democratic primary in 2016.[1][5]
