A City of El Cerrito Sales Tax Increase, Measure A ballot question was on the February 5, 2008 ballot for voters in the City of El Cerrito in Contra Costa County, California, where it was approved.
Measure A increased established "a dedicated one-half cent sales tax" to be "used exclusively for street improvements."
A two-thirds (66.67%) vote was required for approval. (In California, when the revenue from a proposed local sales tax measure will be earmarked for a specific purpose, it requires a two-thirds (66.67%) vote to pass. If, however, the proposed sales tax is not earmarked for any particular purpose but will instead go into the general fund of the local unit of government that will received the sales tax revenue, a simple majority is required for approval.)

To improve neighborhood streets; enhance road safety citywide by fixing potholes; maintaining, repairing and repaving streets; sealing cracks; improving handicap ramps, crosswalks, bicycle lanes; and maintaining road markings and signage, shall the City of El Cerrito incur debt to immediately begin and accelerate street improvements, paid by establishing a dedicated one-half cent sales tax used exclusively for street improvements, with citizens' oversight and independent audits of expenditure?"[1] |
