Campaign themes

In a 2013 interview with the Courier Post, Heather stated the following when asked about his campaign priorities:[1]

How can the district meet its budget challenges?
Heather says he would promote fiscal transparency, posting every dollar spent on the district website, with vendors’ names and amounts paid. “I will work to reduce any areas of the district that are management-heavy, and try to utilize those savings for the benefit of the students in the classroom,” he said.

The district has a five-year emergency levy that raises about $7 million annually. If elected, will you support its renewal?
Heather says he would probably be supportive, he would like to fine-tune it to see how it could be reduced. “I know the board has made cuts and we can’t cut a lot more,” he said. “I would like to look at closing a building or two to see if we couldn’t cut it in half, but we would probably need to go about where we are at.”

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the district in the next four years?
Improving the district state score by considering a return to earlier, more effective curriculum styles, providing a safe and secure environment for students and being responsive to residents’ needs. He said the Northwest High School uniform policy may need to be extended to other schools.
