Campaign themes

2016

Thompson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[16]

Transportation

  • Excerpt: "Our state deserves a comprehensive mass transit system that helps produce jobs and alleviate traffic while linking the cities in our state with each other and to the 21st Century."

Jobs

  • Excerpt: "Creating jobs has to be our top priority in these trying economic times. Investing in infrastructure and creating a transportation network and school system that will attract business is key."

Clean energy

  • Excerpt: "Attract firms to locate here to produce and to research biofuels and solar energy. Given recent events in the Gulf of Mexico that clearly show that our federal government and private industry have done no research and development into how to prevent and contain oil spills, I am adamantly against any proposed expansion of off-shore oil drilling off the coast of Georgia."

Immigration

  • Excerpt: "Immigration plays a vital role in the 5th District. Our county is home to a more diverse community than any other in the state. As such, immigration is often a prominent concern among my constituents, many who have struggled to immigrate thanks to the complex, outdated laws in our system."

Community issues

  • Excerpt: "I will continue to support code enforcement efforts, mandatory garbage pick-up and the expansion and use of public private partnerships and tax dollar investments in our communities like the ones being made by the three CIDS in our district (Gwinnett Village, Gwinnett Place and Lilburn)."

Health care

  • Excerpt: "Governor Deal should expand Medicaid in accordance to the provisions provided for the PPACA. This expansion will allow thousands of vulnerable Georgians access to medical care at a price which is far lower than it would cost to implement normally."

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Georgia

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
