Campaign themes

Helwig stated the following on his website as major issues facing the district, S.M.A.R.T.:[3]

Students:
I want to improve the quality of our children’s education and elevate us above Common Core, putting student learning over student testing and creating merit-based accountability for teachers. Every parent’s expectation of a school board is for them to create an education system where their children flourish and grow. I will create that system!

Mentors and Parents:
Parents don’t want to be surprised by their children’s report card – they want to have confidence that the school system they entrust with their children today will help build the leaders of tomorrow. I want the parents to have the freedom to be as much a part of the education process as their children. There should always be a positive interaction with Olentangy Faculty and Staff and a proactive approach to ensure parents are fully aware of their child’s development. I will ensure that parents have a strong voice at the table!

Academics:
Our children are competing beyond Ohio – therefore, our children’s education should not just be measured against other Ohio districts, but rather against the international stage, where they compete for scholarships and achieve Academic excellence sought after by top universities. To accomplish this, I will promote freedom in the classroom so that teachers can focus on ensuring our children learn rather than teaching to a test. Teachers should enjoy the fruits of their efforts of helping prepare our children to compete in the world through merit-based meaningful, Accountable evaluations. The school board should be driving the Administration to facilitate the maximum learning of our teachers, so they can live up to the Olentangy slogan!

Responsibility:
The School Board has a responsibility to taxpayers and parents, to enable them to be heard and respond to feedback before they take action. I will bring the residents of Olentangy back to the table at the School Board meetings. The School Board has a responsibility to make sound financial decisions that balance education costs and effective curriculum to ensure our children have the environment in which they can excel. I will bring objective measurements and accountability so that as a School Board we can balance spending and improve education.

Teachers:
Teachers should have the flexibility to engage and mentor their students to facilitate the best education environment possible to ensure each child has the opportunity to excel. Teachers don’t want to be surprised about evaluations and their current performance within the education system. We need to develop an accountable measurement system that allows our Teachers to develop their skills and be rewarded for their countless hours spent outside the classroom. We need to encourage our teachers to mentor with teachers in other districts ahead of Olentangy and bring these ideas and process back and improve on them. We need to build an environment that allows passionate teachers to excel, and be a model for the others to follow.
