I'm a Democrat running for the Alabama House of Representatives in District 54. I’m running because I believe Alabama needs a bold, progressive voice to be a champion for working families and fight for a better quality of life for all Alabamians.

I am a longtime community organizer, activist, and professional communicator who is sick of the status quo in Alabama. I've founded two of Alabama's largest LGBTQ support orgs, was the primary organizer for the 2019 March for Reproductive Freedom, and over the last 5 years, I've helped nearly 20 Democrats—almost all women—run for office to combat Alabama's astoundingly low percent of representation (16%). I believe that our legislators have a responsibility to help build the bench of future candidates and to help them succeed, too.

My campaign is entirely people-powered and free from the influence of corporate PAC/lobbyist money, and I am passionate about getting corporate money out of our elections entirely.

  • I'm a candidate who won't be bought. All of my campaign donations have come from individuals—not corporate PACs or lobbyist firms.
  • I'm dedicated to building up power for Democrats in Alabama. Over the last 5 years, I've helped 20 other Democrats run, and once elected, I'll dedicate even more time and energy to building the bench.
  • I'm not afraid to stand alone if it means standing up for working families. I believe everyone has a right to healthcare, a safe job, and a great public education.
Personally, I'm very passionate about getting corporate money out of our elections, expanding Medicaid in Alabama, reforming police training, investing in future industries (like green energy and biomedical research), protecting unions, and expanding voting rights.
I think that being a person of integrity is one of the most important characteristics for an elected official, and sadly, it's not a quality we often see in our legislators. To me, integrity means being the same person you presented to others during your campaign as you are once you're elected. It means being beholden to the people of your district only, not corporate interests. Beyond that, I think a heart for service to others is absolutely vital. If you're not there to serve, you're there for the wrong reasons.
I believe that the quality that will most help me be a successful officeholder is my persistence. There's a reason my campaign motto is "Brit Won't Quit" and that's because I'll stay in a fight for years and years if I believe it is one that is important to bettering the quality of life for others. Beyond that, I'm an excellent communicator and with a deep background in community organizing, I know how to get others to buy into a cause. I'm an honest and transparent person who will bring those qualities to the office every day.
My first job was working in my uncle's seafood market in my hometown. It was an eye opening experience to see a small business run up close, and it gave me a better understanding of the challenges small business owners face. I also learned a great deal about customer service, and I've carried the skills I picked up during that time with me throughout life.
Dolly Parton and Galantis recently collaborated on a remake of the song "Faith (Have a little faith in me)" and it's so catchy! I think of it as my campaign anthem because that's what I'm asking of the voters of District 54: please have a little faith in me and give me a chance to represent you proudly.
I think Alabama's greatest challenge is that we need a legislature focused on improving quality of life for Alabamians. Unfortunately, I think corporate influences are a huge roadblock to achieving that end goal. I believe that we can support business growth, job creation, and more without harming working families. Right now, though, the legislature serves big business first and foremost and the people second. For us to have a better future, that has to change.
I believe it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in serving others, in whatever form that may be. I also think state legislators should be actively involved in building out the bench of future candidates and helping them get the support they need to succeed.
I have very much modeled my campaign to be similar to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's first run for Congress. Like her, I believe that Democrats need to disconnect from corporate dollars and focus more on people-powered campaigning and governing. I appreciate her willingness to stand boldly on progressive issues and that includes standing alone if she has to. While I have my own policy priorities, I am in awe of her willingness to walk a different path and to challenge the Democratic party from within. I seek to do the same.
