There are several special elections scheduled in 2013 for the state of Alabama.

Congressional elections in Alabama
U.S. House of Representatives
The 1st Congressional District of Alabama held a special election for the U.S. House in 2013. Burton LeFlore won the Democratic primary that occurred on September 24, 2013. Bradley Byrne defeated Dean Young in the GOP runoff primary election that was held on November 5. The general election took place on December 17, and Byrne won.[1]
The special election was held to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Rep. Jo Bonner (R). Bonner resigned to take a job as vice chancellor of government and economic development at the University of Alabama.[2]
Bonner said on July 23, 2013, that he would resign on August 2, 2013, instead of August 15, 2013, as originally announced.[3] Gov. Robert Bentley could not call a special election to fill the seat until Bonner vacated the seat and moving up the date allowed the governor to schedule the special election so that a replacement can be elected and seated before the new session of Congress begins in January 2014.[3]

State House District 74
- Rep. Jay Love (R) resigned on August 1, 2013, to work for the Business Council of Alabama. A special election has been scheduled for December 3. A primary took place on October 8, and a GOP runoff election took place on November 19 between Charlotte Meadows and Dimitri Polizos, which Polizos won.[4][5]

State House District 104
- Rep. Jim Barton (R) resigned on August 7, 2013, to work for the Kinney Capitol Group. A special election has been called for December 3, with a primary on October 8. Stephen P. Carr, II won the October 8 Democratic primary and GOP primary candidates, Susan Hightower and Margie Wilcox, will face off in the GOP runoff election on December 3.[6]

- Yvonne Kennedy (D) died on December 8, 2012. Gov. Robert Bentley (R) scheduled a special election for May 21, 2013 to fill the vacancy, with a primary on February 26, 2013. As no candidate took over 50 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary, the top two vote-getters - Karlos Finley and Adline C. Clarke - met in a runoff on April 9, which Clarke won.[7][8][9][10] Clarke went on to win the general election on May 21, 2013.

State House District 11
- Jeremy Oden (R) was appointed to the Alabama Public Service Commission by Gov. Robert Bentley on November 30, 2012. A special election was held on May 7, 2013 to fill the vacancy, which Randall Shedd won. As no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary on February 12, 2013, the top two vote-getters - Randall Shedd and Danny Alldredge - met in a primary runoff election on March 26, 2013, which Shedd won. Because the Democratic Party failed to certify a candidate by April 10, Shedd was declared the winner.[11][12][13]

State House District 35
- Ben Brooks (R) was elected as a circuit judge in Mobile County on November 6, 2012. Once he was sworn into the new position a special election had to be held to fill the vacancy. A special primary was scheduled for January 29, 2013. Candidates had until December 13, 2012 to file. Since no Democrats filed, the primary became the general election. A runoff between the top two vote-getters, Jim Barton and Bill Hightower, took place March 12, 2013 which Hightower won.[14][15][16][17]

Important voting information
- Alabama uses an open primary system and does not require voters to declare a party preference when registering to vote.
- As of May 2013, Alabama is one of the 37 states that have not implemented online voter registration.
- The 2013 Alabama State Legislature is considering a bill that would change the deadline for voter registration from 10 days before the election to 17 days. Jefferson County is exempted from the bill.[18][19]

There is no early voting in Alabama.[20]
Elections Performance Index
Alabama ranked 47th out of the 50 states and District of Columbia in the Pew Charitable Trusts' Elections Performance Index (EPI), based on the 2012 elections. The EPI examined election administration performance and assigned an average percentage score based on 17 indicators of election performance. These indicators were chosen in order to determine both the convenience and integrity of these three phases of an election: registration, voting and counting. Alabama received an overall score of 49 percent.[21]
