Hi, I'm Vicki. I've spent 25 years working as a family advocate and community leader. I'm running for State Assembly to be an advocate for families, businesses, and taxpayers throughout our region.

From jobs to education, our legislators are taking us for a ride to the far extremes. The state government is increasingly ineffective, out of balance, and out of touch. It's time to bring checks and balances back to Sacramento.

I am running for office to help fix our failing model which rewards party loyalty over problem-solving. My public service has focused on bridging party lines to make local government work for people. I will take that experience and approach to our state government. From highways to water, energy, to public safety, I want to be a leader who listens to and works for YOU, not state parties or special interests.

Thank you for being engaged in this election -- I look forward to hearing from you.
My work with youth in crisis has made me passionate about providing young people resources for mental health. With the right resources, I have seen lives turned around, helping keep our young people and our communities safe, productive, and thriving.

Vicki Nohrden's public service includes time as a family liaison in the justice system, a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), and a member of the Civil Grand Jury. In the past, she worked as a realtor, but today Vicki operates her own business, training leaders. She has a master's degree in religious education and a bachelor's degree from Shalom Bible College.

I am passionate about mental health support systems, balanced state budgets, job creation, and other ways to decrease taxes and regulations pushing businesses out of state.

Candidate Connection

Vicki Nohrden participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 16, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Vicki Nohrden's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Public Safety Immigration (although federal) Taxes Education policies[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I'm passionate about reform which includes immigration. Although a federal issue our state and federal governments need to come together to solve this problem. We can't keep looking the other way. We need comprehensive immigration reform, safe communities, and safe borders. I'm also passionate about making sure our schools are safe places for our children and that our workplaces and public gathering places are safe.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Vicki Nohrden answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty Integrity Authentic/Genuine Trustworthy Strong leadership skills[4]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I believe I am an honest, hard working, genuine,, caring, thoughtful candidate with good listening skills and strong leadership abilities.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To listen well, think before you act, consider the long term affect your decision(s) will have on future generations. Consider the outcome of your decision making. Listen to your constituents. Be willing to listen to another persons point of view and be willing to change yours if necessary. Take responsibility.[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
A life that impacted others to follow.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
As a young girl of 7 years old I remember watching TV when the news announced that our President John F. Kennedy had been shot. I remember being very affected by the news and began to cry. Our nation looked up to President Kennedy and a our nation mourned his loss.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was babysitting my next door neighbors children. Later I went on to get a job at a local restaurant as a waitress.[4]
What happened on your most awkward date?
I realized I shouldn't have accepted it.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because it's a special time when our family sets aside the time to come together, share what's going on in their lives, favorite recipes, good food and spend time with our children and grandchildren. We take the time to say what we appreciate about one another and what were truly thankful for.[4]

One of my favorite books is the book of Proverbs. I am one who considers a matter and I like to solve problems. Proverbs is a book of great wisdom.[4]

The population size of the Senate District is almost twice that of an Assembly District. Senate terms are two four-year terms where Assembly members serve for three two-year terms. The Californai legislature has 40 state Senators and 80 Assembly members.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes it can be beneficial but not absolutely a requirement.[4]

Public Safety, Water, Immigration, Homelessness.[4]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
One that they are willing to work together and listen to one another.[4]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes I do. The benefit is that as you build a personal and working relationship when you don't see eye to eye on issues or you vote differently at the end of the day you can still be friends. Life is like that![4]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
An honest and fair one.[4]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Yes I would like to serve on the Public Safety Committee, Human Services and the Committee on Accountability and Administrative review.[4]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
Possibly.[4]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
Yes when I recently heard a mom share about why and how her 13 year old son was shot and killed because he said he was an American. She shared how she had processed that tragedy, would never forget her son and how important it was to repeal the sanctuary state bill in California. Many were touched by her testimony.[4]

Ballotpedia biographical submission form

The candidate completed Ballotpedia's biographical information submission form:

Is there anything you would like to add?

I’m running for state assembly because I want to offer voters another option other than what the current legislature is offering.

The current legislature has been busy passing bills for higher taxes, more regulations and expensive costs to do business in California, they are writing laws that take away parents’ rights and now sanctuary city and state laws allowing safe havens for drug trafficking, criminals and lawlessness to pour over our borders. I want to change that and that’s why I’m running for state assembly to give the voters another option in the 2018 election.[4]
