The Vermont gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2012, following a primary on August 28, 2012. The period for major party candidates to file with the Vermont Secretary of State ran from May 29th through June 14th.[1]

Three candidates entered the race, and none faced a primary challenger: Incumbent Peter Shumlin (D), state Senator Randy Brock (R) and Martha Abbott (Vermont Progressive Party).[2] Two candidates - Emily Peyton (Independent) and Cris Ericson (United States Marijuana) - announced their intention to run but failed to file their paperwork with the Vermont Secretary of State in time for the June 15th deadline. Abbott, the Progressive Party nominee, who was nominally unopposed in the primary, dropped out of the race one week after the primary election. Her candidacy was a purely strategic maneuver to prevent another member of her party from winning, and she said she wanted to yield her party's support to help Shumlin win re-election.[3]
