Valerie Young
Valerie Young was a candidate for North District representative on the Newport News School Board in Virginia. She was defeated in the general election that was held on May 3, 2016. Young ran unsuccessfully in 2012. She finished in second behind Darian Scott.[1]
Biography
Young is a community resource office for the Newport News Police Department.[2]

Three of the seven seats on the Newport News Public Schools school board were up for general election on May 3, 2016. In the North District, Marvin Harris defeated Curtis Bethany and Valerie Young. John Eley III won the South District seat by defeating four other candidates including Sheryl Holmes Abbott, Terri Best, Bethany Martin, and Yugonda Sample. Incumbent Shelly Simonds won re-election to the Central District seat after running unopposed.[1]

Newport News Public Schools is located in eastern Virginia in Newport News. Newport News was home to 182,965 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4] The district was the ninth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 29,777 students.[5]
