My name is Sarah Smith and I am running for the Iowa House for Iowa and Poweshiek counties. I am a common sense, middle class, 4th generation resident of my district. I come from a family with deep roots in public service who have taught me that being a good neighbor is about giving back and listening to the concerns of others. I work at Grinnell College in the office of Community Enhancement and Engagement. I am also active in community service by serving on various boards including: UnityPoint - Grinnell Regional Medical Center and GNSF - "Grinnell Newburg School Foundation" - as well as coaching the girls high school swim team and youth swim club.

I have always worked on finding common ground when solving a problem. Whether that be in my former position at a local non-profit, Imagine Grinnell as an executive director, as the chair of the vote yes school bond committee, and now at my current job at Grinnell College. I have always and will continue to work on finding ideas from anywhere in a community and focus on making sure that all voices are included and heard.

  • Fully fun public education and create equal funding for rural school districts
  • Ensure accessible and affordable healthcare for all Iowans
  • Investing in renewable energy and sustaining our environment for future generations
As a board member of the Grinnell Newburg School Foundation, I have helped raise funds for major projects, mini-grants, and reimbursements to our public school educators to help create innovative practices in our school system. Because state support for education has been below 3% for the past several years, schools have been forced to delay technology upgrades and reduce educational opportunities for students. I want to increase school funding to at least at the current inflation rate of 3-4%, a step that will provide much needed support to our teachers and students.

Iowa ranks near the bottom of all states in access to mental healthcare access. We need to increase the number of providers and facilities across Iowa to ensure everyone can get help when necessary. In our area several services have come and gone leaving our communities with fragmented mental healthcare services. Mental healthcare will be one of my top issues in the legislature; it's too important to ignore. I want to improve access to mental health services for our rural communities.

We need to increase Medicaid reimbursement rates for our rural hospitals. Increasing that rate will be a step in the right direction toward better financial security for these important local institutions. Rural hospitals are one of the largest employers in communities. I want to make sure that they remain open for the economic stability of our small towns.
I am a common sense, middle class, 4th generation resident of my district. I come from a family with deep roots in public service who have taught me that being a good neighbor is about giving back and listening to the concerns of others.

I have always worked on finding common ground when solving a problem. Whether that be in my former position as Executive Director at Imagine Grinnell, working on the school bond, and or now at my current job at Grinnell College, I have always and will continue to work on finding ideas from anywhere in a community and focus on making sure that all voices are included and heard.

When I am in the statehouse, I will proactively seek out and listen to ideas from our neighbors in the community and focus on making sure that all voices are included and heard.
My first job was in retail at a women's clothing store, Images, in downtown Grinnell. I worked at Images for over 6 years and loved the experiences I gained at that job. I learned about the value of a small town business through building relationships with the clients, purchasing lines of clothing based on the likes of clients (many times that was different from my own), and how to keep a business profitable. The owners were caring, community minded people that showed me the value of vitality in a small, downtown district.
Anne of Green Gables - It is my favorite because my grandmother's family was from Prince Edward Island and the character is a strong girl that is smart, creative and kind. She does not always fits it with everyone and their ideas but always makes sure that her voice is heard.
"My shot" - Hamilton, love the lyrics "...I'm just like my country, I'm young, scrappy, and hungry and I am not throwing away my shot".
I do not believe that it's beneficial for a state legislator to have previous experience in government or politics. What I believe is needed for state legislators is energy and forward-thinking ideas that move their district and state towards a better future.

I'm running for the Iowa House to be a voice for everyone across our district and state. I have always worked on finding common ground when solving a problem and believe that the right decision, an informed decision, is made by listening to both sides of an issue. Over the past months, I have watched our current leadership and now more than ever, we need fresh ideas at the Statehouse for paid sick leave, supporting small businesses, farmers and non-profits, affordable and accessible healthcare, increased mental healthcare access, increased funding for our public schools, internet access to all of Iowa, and jobs that pay a living wage. I have had a great deal of experience learning to listen, consider, and support the voices of others. Iowa can rise out of this pandemic and derecho stronger, but we are going to need innovative, forward-thinking ideas, like mine, to get there.
Our greatest challenges over the next ten years will be to move our public schools, businesses, and small communities in the digital future. Now more than ever we need to think about reimagining and changing our mindset for many of the norms of the past. Internet needs to be part of the foundation for a strong economic infrastructure. Fast reliable internet is no longer a luxury, it should be viewed as a utility like electricity, water, and phone. I am part of a committee through our school foundation that is raising money for students and teachers to provide hotspots in order for them to just have access to the internet in their homes during this pandemic. There are many rural areas and small towns that have spotty or no internet. We need fast, reliable internet in every home and business in Iowa. I have been impressed with the number of small businesses that have moved more of their ordering to an on-line platform in order to still earn revenue during this pandemic. We need our small town businesses to continue to have on-line access to increase their customer base which therefore will result in higher revenues. We need all Iowans to have equal access to fast and reliable internet for school and work.

I believe that public schools and community colleges are the cornerstone of rural communities and are an investment in all of our futures. Everyone is better off when our public schools and community colleges succeed. We need strong schools to attract and retain young families and businesses. We need to increase school funding to be at least at the current school inflation of 3-4% which will be a step in the right direction to supporting our teachers. With the low SSA percentages schools have also been forced to delay technology upgrades and reduce opportunities for students.
