An effort to recall three of the seven members of the Romulus Community Schools Board of Education in Michigan did not go to a vote in 2023. The Wayne County Election Commission unanimously voted against the petition due to a lack of clarity at a hearing on July 25, 2023. Susan Evitts, Judy Kennard, and Debi Pyles were named in the recall petitions.[1][2]

Petition against Susan Evitts

The recall petition against Evitts included the following reason for recall:[3]

Ms. Evitts was absent from Board meetings for 5 months totaling over 11 absences equaling 5 monthes.[4]

Petition against Judy Kennard

The recall petition against Kennard included the following reason for recall:[3]

“Ms. Kennard was absent from Board Meetings for 5 months totaling 10 absences equalling 5 monlhs.[4]

Petition against Debi Pyles

The recall petition against Pyles included the following reason for recall:[3]

Ms. Pyles violated M.C.L. 18.1284 which regulates the Records Retention and Disposal Schedule for Michigan Public School Records. As President of Romulus Community School Board, Ms. Pyles ordered the shredding of records and disposed of them in the common dumpster instead of using a document Deslruction Service.[4]

To get a recall on the ballot in Michigan, recall supporters must collect signatures equal in number to 25% of voters in the jurisdiction in the last gubernatorial election. They have 60 days between the collection of the first signature and the collection of the last signature on the petition. Recall petitions are eligible to collect signatures for 180 days.[5]

The recall petition was filed by Rita Hampton on July 13, 2023. The Wayne County Election Commission unanimously voted against the petition due to a lack of clarity at a hearing on July 25, 2023.[1][6]
