|Missouri Public Schools (KCPS). I am the son of two retired public school teachers and the husband of a career long public educator. My belief in public education runs deep – it has spanned my entire life.
I have two daughters currently attending schools in the North Kansas City School District. One is a third-grader at Davidson Elementary and the other is a Freshman at North Kansas City High School. Prior to attending these schools, my daughters attended Winnwood, Crestview, Eastgate and Northgate. My home is in the North Kansas City High School attendance area, my small business is located near West Englewood Elementary, our family is deeply invested in the community of North Kansas City Schools.
It is critically important to me that students in all areas of our district boundaries have a voice of advocacy on our School Board. I want to be this voice and ensure representation for all of our students. I will work to ensure I am supporting all students, teachers and staff members, to give them the best opportunity to do their jobs and do their jobs well. I believe in the district’s vision and mission and want to use my voice and influence to make a difference for all students.- An area of priority that I have identified is to advocate for increasing the compensation for our paraprofessionals and instructional support staff who are working so closely with our students to provide individualized supports which in turn assists our teachers with being able to meet the overall needs of the students in their classrooms.
- When visiting with district constituents it has been shared with me that one of the greatest needs we are facing is supporting the mental health needs of our students. While I am proud of what our district is doing in this area, I feel it is so important that as a district we continue to listen and expand supports to address the individualized student needs we are facing.
- Until all students are succeeding, we still have work to do and need to look at varied ways to continue to support those working directly with our students so they can best support our students. We must ensure that we have the correct staff and resources in each building to support the students.
The district needs to ensure that we are listening to those that are doing the work with our students day in and
day out (i.e. teachers, support staff, building administrators, counselors) and lean in to their expertise and experiences to guide the continuation of changes and continued student and staff supports in this area.
I believe this can be accomplished by developing plans and supports, as well as financial allocations, based on individual needs of schools instead of a “one size fits all” approach to district supports. More individualized school supports would in turn assist with teacher retention, hiring, and meeting the needs of our students.
As a Board Member, my role would be to listen and also engage by asking questions and partnering with the administration, caregivers, and staff to make the best
