Magliocchetti was a 2012 Independent candidate for District First Essex District of the Massachusetts State Senate.

A special election for the position of Massachusetts House of Representatives Third Essex District was called for November 7, 2017. A primary election was held on October 10, 2017. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was September 5, 2017.[1]

The seat became vacant on July 19, 2017, after Brian Dempsey (D) resigned to join a Boston lobbying firm.[2]

Andy Vargas defeated Paul Magliocchetti in the Democratic primary. Shaun Toohey was unopposed in the Republican primary.[3] Vargas defeated Toohey in the special election.
