The Great Passage focuses on language as an expression of self. Everyone wants to be understood and understand others, and dictionaries are presented here as tools to that end, instead of the rulebooks they are often touted as at school.
Great, animation and art style, which generates a very grounded, realistic look, but still manages to be artful in the copious amount of lovingly placed details.
Also beautifully directed, lots of interesting shots and smart use of suggestive imagery, lots of neat little touches everywhere.
It's easy to see that a lot of care went into it, everything feels very deliberate and carefully placed.
It's perfect in what it wants to do in just about every way, so if the premise sounds even mildly interesting to you, go for it!

The publication of a new dictionary titled The Great Passage progresses. Majime Mitsuya, originally from publisher Genbu Shobo's sales department, has been recruited by Araki Kouhei, a veteran editor of the dictionary department who is looking to retire soon. The dictionary department is known internally as the "money-eating insect," but Mitsuya uses his perseverance and attachment to the words in order to become a great editor. Mitsuya, who has poor social skills, finds himself working with another man named Nishioka Masashi, who is able to express himself better.

Even though the world of dictionaries may seem mundane and boring at first glance, this series is actually very touching and passionate.

Anime about little nothing (many would say), about creating a dictionary... but still somehow made in a very nice and relaxing way. Characters are solid and music is good, also with a little dose of romance in the background, just not forced into. Obviously it will make you think about how much work and patience it takes to achieve goals. In conclusion this is rather serious watch, but you will rather end up liking it.

Anime about an introvert guy writing a dictionairy, with a bit of romance. Definitely a good anime, although I feel it takes itself a bit too serious and artistic (with the words). Perhaps its because I don't understand Japanese. I was a slice of life but it I feel it fell short on making me interested in the characters lifes, therefore making it sometimes pretty boring (or bland, as the art and music wasn't really memorable) near the end.

If you like Slice of Life anime this is for you. Yes, it's about dictionaries but, as most of anime in this genre, it shows importance about doing your best on anything you do.
Music and animation are great. Characters are good directed. Sincerely, you will fall in love watching to Fune o Amu. 9/10. Recommended!

A must see for avid readers who like words and their meanings/interpretations since it's an anime about the production and publishing of dictionaries. If you like slowpaced slice of life anime with great music (especially the ED is recommended!) and with a lot of emotions and a little bit of romance this show is for you!

Warm and melancholic. It's another one of those 'commercial' animes, really, where a story explains what goes into X product. In this case, the product is 'dictionaries'. This is a good watch to help someone appreciate the value of a dictionary, and it was done well enough if you like Slice of Life anime. But I can imagine someone who doesn't appreciate dictionaries or the 'value of words' being a little too... preached to. I recommend watching this show as a warm/fuzzy time filler.
