WWE 2K18 is the best wrestling game so far. A great variety of wrestlers with a new technical section that finally meets this generation's standards. A great game where you'll always have something to do and wrestling fans will enjoy it as will kids.

WWE 2k18 still has some of the flaws that have been present in the latest entries of the series. The new illumination system and the revisited gameplay offer the best WWE game since 2K took care of the franchise.

The wrestling is superb - but its teething problems must be patched quickly.

Under the better-than-ever graphics and great-as-ever core wrestling gameplay, WWE 2K18 is a largely disappointing iteration. It wastes too much of its ambition on the poorly written and dull MyCareer RPG mode, leaving its other promising modes to languish for another year. What few enhancements we get to the carry mechanics and eight-person matches are welcome, but not as much of a year-over-year refresh as would be needed to keep the excitement level as high as it’s been in past years.

If wrestling is your thing, WWE 2K18 does just enough to make it worthy of your attention, but you’ll always be left thinking that it could be so much more.

Although WWE 2K18 brings a number of changes and improvements to the long-running series, its handling of the MyCareer mode is truly baffling. Whatever ambitious qualities it might have had are buried under a snore-inducing grind. Almost everything from boots to suplexes is locked away inside loot crates. If the player wants to craft their own wrestler and guide them to glory, they're better off sticking to create-a-superstar and participating in the WWE Universe. Otherwise, their avatar is going to be a poorly-dressed schmuck with a very limited set of abilities. Take this critic's advice, and just ignore MyCareer entirely. The other gameplay modes are where the entertainment is at.

WWE 2K18's in-ring combat is fundamentally flawed, and will be as divisive as it often is. Yet there's no denying the inherent joy derived from performing your favorite Superstar's signature moves.

Each year pretty much feels the same and I think the game is in need of a massive overhaul. The roster in the game this year however is absolutely huge and without a doubt the biggest the game has ever had, and I appreciate this but I would prefer them to focus on other areas of the game more. The area I would like them to focus on more is the amount of bugs the game has. There definitely seems to be more bugs than usual and these bugs do impact on the fun factor quite considerably. I would also have liked to have seen more changes to the Universe mode as well because playing it just feels like a chore too often. I did however like the MyCareer mode more this year and the main reason for that is that they’ve let you have more freedom, which makes things more enjoyable. I also liked the little tweaks that have been made to the wrestling this year, and I think the gameplay feels more fluid and productive than it has in a while. The presentation side of the game has good and bad points. Visually I feel the game looks great and there seems to be more added details this year, which makes the game feel more realistic. The sound design though is not very good and the music just ends up grating on your nerves. At the end of the day I can see why people are becoming more and more frustrated with the WWE series, and the main reason for this is the lack of changes. The game doesn’t have any competition and I just feel that the amount of effort going into the game isn’t as high as it could be. Don’t get me wrong the game isn’t bad, it just feels the same every year and that can be off putting to long term fans of the series. Expand

I'm a huge WWE fan. When they first announced this game I was excited, just like every year. When I started playing it felt great, but then II'm a huge WWE fan. When they first announced this game I was excited, just like every year. When I started playing it felt great, but then I realized the same old problems wouldn't have been fixed. The Create-A-Superstar mode and the Create-An-Entrance mode have no content. The Universe mode kept the same problem as well, it continues creating rivalries between a superstar who has an overall of 93 and someone who has a 76. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Microtransaction hell, without the microtransactions!

Be warned, MyCareer is a worthless game function, hope it's not your favorite! You start as a guy in underwear and can't progress past it without spending an in-game currency to roll on loot boxes.

When you get something from a loot box, you have to pay more in-game currency to use it.

You have to use the in-game currency to pay for skills, abilities, skill points, outfit pieces, hair, etc etc.

What's worse? NONE of this is unlocked for subsequent created characters in MyCareer mode. So the boost you get when you start a character is gone on the next one and the grind is SO bad that it's not even worth playing the career game mode.

Even further and sorry for the spoilers but you should know, the career mode is on rails. There's not really a big decision making process, no progression really. You make a guy, you get told what to do, you do it, and it sucks. Maybe it's a real reflection on life in the WWE, maybe they're trying to make a simplified version of the Bo Dallas story, I don't know. It's not fun. So maybe it doesn't matter if the stuff doesn't stay unlocked for a new character, there's no point in playing it twice.

Oh and the rate of currency accumulation is abysmal. A loot box costs 10k (you can buy smaller ones but why?) and you will earn maybe 500-600 in an evening of normal play. There are *4* items in the loot crate and one currency refund for some reason which varies from almost the price of the box to almost nothing. There are hundreds of items. By the time you get what you want, maybe, your character will be in their 50's.

Universe mode seems okay, but there's no plot. It's just random wrestling matches over and over and over. If that's cool, and that's what you're going for then the game's fine. There's microtransactions there too, but thankfully you can just pay once with real money and all that stupid crap goes away. It's the easiest (and worst) 5 bucks to spend on DLC. It's a real shame they have to extort another 5 bucks from you after paying for the game in the first place but I suppose it's there so when everyone starts taking their copies of the game to the store and trading it in, they'll at least get 5 more bucks from anyone dumb enough to buy a secondhand copy of the game.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to buy another WWE game. This is the cancer eating the game industry from the inside and it needs to stop. I regret buying this one, but I do hope they're going to change things up with the (hopefully quick) patch that might fix some of the rest of the bugs/glitches/etc in the game.

There is one glowing flaw with this game and it is one that in my opinion ruins the game for me.

    Career mode.

This is one of the most bastardized plays for money that I have ever seen. You literally cant wear or unlock anything when it comes to your custom wrestler with out grinding for not hours, but days OR spending more money on a game that you spent money one, spend more money on for season pass, spent more money on for the Kurt Angle pack, which for some strange reason *Cough* money *Cough* is not included in the season pass, and also the Batista, RVD, Retro Cena pack, ALSO NOT INCLUDED ON THE SEASON PASS THAT IS SUPPOSED TO INCLUDE EVERYTHING!!!!!

2K demands that if you do not want your career mode wrestler to look like a default jobber and you actually want to make your wrestler you own, GIVE THEM MORE MONEY ON TOP OF THE $90+ USD that you all ready spent on it or enjoy grinding for a week so that you can unlock 50 loot boxes that give you duplicate after duplicate of that Brett Hart jacket that you will never freaking wear..

Another thing is the fact that you are now no longer allowed to lose key matches. if it says you need to win or you need to lose, you have to or it resets the match. The one that stands out the most is the money in the bank match. Winning this match is hard enough.... actually next to impossible even on easy. Yet not only do you have to win it, you have to use the ladder as a weapon as well as do an OMG moment. not knowing these were all have to's, I played the match 5 times in order to win it and once I won it, it said I failed to do everything and started it all over. At that point I threw my hands up and said no, im done... I exited out of story mode and will not continue it.

2K has become just a pathetic excuse for a company after they pulled this one.

But this one - I wasThis very well might be the worst game I have ever played, and I have played many terrible and beyond terrible games. But this one - I was lost for words when I started playing it. The characters look circa late ps2 era, the animation is simply awful, mycareer mode is broken and does not work properly (it broke on me 3 times, and I just gave up), the loading times are atrocious and are there for anything, including simply changing menues. The story of MyCareer is... terrible. You don't get any cutscenes, you don't even get any voiced characters, you don't get any choice at all, and "walking backstage" part just might be the most pointless feature in any sports game - it actually makes this already terrible game somehow worse, because it does not offer ANYTHING but pointless a-to-b running with horrid framerate. The fighting mechanics feel like a beta version - nobody goes down after only one finisher, even if you control The Undertaker and take on, say, Zack Ryder, be ready that good old Zack will kick out of couple Tombstone Piledrivers even if he has no health and all his body parts are in the red. The only good thing about this game is a roster, and even that is tarnished by how downright amateur most of the wrestlers look - I saw CAWS in Xbox 360 that looked miles better than half of these "official" wrestlers. Simply put, this game is an abomination, and, quite frankly, I am surprised that there is still no lawsuit against 2K and/or Yukes for releasing this pile of garbage. Expand
