History of Volkswagen Slovakia

Volkswagen Bratislava, s.r.o. was founded in 1991 as a joint venture between the joint-stock Car Company of Bratislava (Bratislavské automobilové závody, a. s.) and Volkswagen plc. The production of the first automobile, the Volkswagen Passat Variant, began in 1992. As early as the June of 1992 the 1,000th car rolled from the assembly line. The production of that model lasted until 1997.

The year 1994 was really important for Volkswagen Bratislava. Firstly, the production range was expanded with a new model, the new VW Golf A3 which was a mainstay in the company until 2005. Later that year, the full production of gearboxes was launched.

The 50,000th car and the 400,000th Gearbox were fabricated in 1996. A year later, the company already employed 3,000 workers. New technologies including laser welding in the body shop were introduced during these years.

The following years were marked with important changes in the life of the company. The number of employees reached the 5,000 mark and the 1 millionth gearbox was produced. But the major change was the change of the legal form in 1999 from Volkswagen Bratislava to VOLKSWAGEN SLOVAKIA, a. s. In the he same year, the production of the Volkswagen Polo started.

Volkswagen Slovakia jumped straight into the new millennium with the exclusive price of "Company of the year 2000 in Slovakia". A new plant in Martin focused on the production of Components for gearboxes and breaks and was opened in May 2010. A big stepping stone was the start of production of the Volkswagen Touareg in 2002. In the following year the famous rope way was put into full use, transporting cars from the Assembly hall to the test track. During the same year, the production of the first non-VW model, the SEAT Ibiza was launched and lasted until 2005.

The year 2005 brought a new SUV to our production range: the Audi Q7. Moreover, Dr. Andreas Tostmann became the Chairman of the Board in 2006.

2007 was the year of the 2,000,000th car and the end of the VW Polo in Bratislava. It was replaced in 2008 by a new brand and a new model - the Škoda Octavia.

The facelift of the Audi Q7 came in May 2009 but big changes came with the 2nd generation of the Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne in February 2010. The VW Touareg was at that time declared as the most innovative car of the Volkswagen brand.

The production of the new line of products, the New Small Family, started in 2011. The New Small Family consists of the cars Volkswagen up!, Škoda Citigo and SEAT Mii. The investments for this project total € 308 million and will augment the total capacity to 400,000 cars per year and the number of employees will rise by 1,500.

2012 became Albrecht Reimold the Chairman of the Board
