Stann vs Sakara, Three Other Bouts Set for UFC’s Debut in Sweden

The UFC is reportedly bringing a lineup full of established veterans and newly-signed prospects to its promotional debut in Sweden this spring for UFC on FUEL TV 2, which will take place on April 14 at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm.

Among the bouts expected to be televised on the event's main card is former WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann's return to action against fellow striker Alessio Sakara in a middleweight bout.

Other matchups first reported by MMA NYTT, include Cyrille Diabate facing UFC newcomer Jorgen Kruth, highly-touted middleweight prospect Magnus Cedenblad challenging Georges St. Pierre training partner Francis Carmont and longtime European veteran Simeon Thoresen taking on Besam Yousef.

The Daily Recap: Silva-Stann Official for UFC 130, Strikeforce GP Headed to Japan & More

— Former longtime PRIDE middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva will return from an extended layoff due to knee surgery at UFC 130 in May, facing upstart striker and military veteran Brian Stann. Silva last defeated Michael Bisping via unanimous decision at UFC 110 last February while Stann scored an impressive stoppage of Chris Leben at UFC 125 last month. [UFC.com]

— Strikeforce will reportedly indeed hold the rest of the quarterfinals of their heavyweight grand prix tournament on April 10 in Japan. The official weigh-in results for tomorrow night’s UFC Fight Night 19 event, which takes place at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, are below. All fighters successfully made weight.

Previewing UFC Fight Night 19: The Prelims

One of the more busy weeks in MMA will kick off on Wednesday when the UFC holds UFC Fight Night 19 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma before premiering the first episode of the tenth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show on Spike TV.

UFC Announces Bouts for April Events

The Ultimate Fighting Championship yesterday confirmed multiple previously rumored bouts that are scheduled to take place at the organization’s separate April events later this year.

Added to the UFC’s return to Canada on April 18 for UFC 97 were a total of four bouts. Former WEC Brian Stann will make his UFC debut against “Ultimate Fighter” alumnus Krzysztof Soszynski on the event’s televised main card.

Stann was slated to take on Steve Cantwell in the third career bout between the two this past December, but was forced out of the bout with a foot injury. Soszynski comes into the fight with one UFC win already under his belt in the form of a second-round submission of Shane Primm.

Fight Announcements: Griffin, Curran, Stann & More

The past few days following the completion of Saturday’s UFC 93 event in Ireland have brought forth a slew of potential fight announcements involving upcoming events being put on by the UFC and WEC. Let’s get right to them:

— One-time WEC featherweight title challenger and longtime veteran Jeff Curran will reportedly make his bantamweight debut against Urijah Faber-protege Joseph Benavidez at WEC 40 on April 5 according to MMA Weekly. The event, which will likely take place in Chicago, will be headlined by WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres defending his title against Brian Bowles.

— Former International Fight League standout Bart Palaszewski will reportedly take on Richard Crunkilton in a lightweight bout at WEC 39 on March 1 according to MMA Junkie, which is also stating that the winner of the bout could receive a title shot against the winner of this weekend’s upcoming lightweight title fight between current champion Jamie Varner and top contender Donald Cerrone.

Report: Stann Injured; Cantwell Rematch Off

Former WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann has reportedly suffered an undisclosed foot injury and has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled rematch against Steve Cantwell at UFC Fight Night 16 on December 10 according to Five Ounces of Pain.

A timetable for Stann’s return from the injury is unknown at this time. No opponents have mentioned as potential replacements to face Cantwell at the event. Both Stann and Cantwell were moved to the UFC just days after the WEC announced that it would be dissolving it’s light heavyweight and middleweight classes before the end of the year.

The two have fought twice before. Cantwell stopped Stann with strikes in the second round of their championship bout on August 3. The fight was Stann’s first title defense. He had won the belt after defeating longtime champion Doug Marshall in March. Stann was victorious against Cantwell in their first meeting, scoring a first-round TKO in just 41 seconds last year.

John has been on me in the past to write some opinion pieces and he’s right.  So once a week, I’ll try to comment on some of the happenings in the world of Mixed Martial Arts as I see them in my warped eyes.

Affliction-EliteXC co-promotion

News last week that Affliction was loaning Andrei Arlovski and Roy Nelson to EliteXC to compete on the CBS October 4 Primetime show was really the best news to come out of either promotion in quite a while.  Many feel the only way for either group to survive is to join forces.  To me, it’s not even about competing with the UFC, it’s more a case of survival.  By combining the MMA promotional experience of EliteXC with the roster and deep pockets of Affliction, they could carve out a very nice segment for themselves.  Affliction, specifically Tom Atencio and Michael Cohen, have made it clear that this is a one time co-promotion at this point, which is the wise thing to do until they see how it works out.  Conversely, EliteXC’s Jared Shaw of course is making veiled threats at the UFC, but that’s nothing new for $kala.  Ultimately though, this could be a huge positive for both promotions.

Where is Fedor fighting next?

So will we next see Fedor fighting in Affliction, or in a thus unannounced New year’s Eve show in Japan?  Upon hearing Fedor promise to fight in Japan on NYE during the Dream 6 show, Jerry Millen of Fedor’s M-1 Global team issued a statement saying that Fedor is under contract to fight for Affliction on their January show that is being co-promoted with boxing’s Golden Boy Promotions.  Affliction has made similar statements.  Just last year Monte Cox, fresh off the creation of M-1 Global featuring Fedor, stated Emelianenko would not be fighting on NYE and instead would compete on a January card.  A few weeks later, Fedor announces his intention to compete on the inaugural Yarennoka show.  This is becoming eerily similar.  From all indications, Fedor’s Affliction contract is exclusive to bouts taking place in the US.  But since the fight would occur in Japan, they might be powerless to prevent it.
