Kojima: "I'll Have to Leave the Industry" if Next Game Goes Wrong

That actually sounds really plausible and within the kind of game type that he would make. He seems very interested in military based story lines, so one where the USA has gone rogue and people need to defend against them seems extremely likely now that you've said it. Honestly, if it tells a good story about curruption and whatnot, I'd buy it. I'm almost hoping this is it now.... I could definately see how he would be afraid to make a game like that. He could end up having an entire country ban his game. If he puts a lot into it and it comes out being banned in one or more regions, he'd surely have to consider quitting his job. I think he's pretty commited to expressing something though, given his words. I'm really excited at the possibilities of this idea.

It'll be a game where you must protect your country from (No Flaming please, it's just a thought) the United States. Who are trying to take over the world. U.S.A. "Natzis"? That sounds pretty controversial.

I doubt it'll be Gender or Sexual related though. But if anyone can some how mix those issues like, gender confusion with mechs, it's definitely Kojima.

Pedophilia, maybe something that touches on gender (no that's too soft). Race is taboo in many parts of the world. It could have something to do with a different viewpoint on something in history i.e. The Holocaust. Something along the lines the problems between Palestinians and Jews. It could be about Necrophilia or Bestiality. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Wow I wonder what this new game is going to be?  It's a pretty bold statement to say that he's going to leave the game industry if it fails.  But I have faith in Kojima that he will create something special.

i'm all for a taboo subject in a game. it sounds pretty cool already, although all he definitely said will be included is mechs.

but i never got all the raiden hate. i've played mgs 2 and watched my friend as he played 3 and 4, and i never understood the raiden hate. i actually really liked his character design and all. sure, he's not all bad ass like snake, but he has his own charm and coolness. so i'm glad he's coming to xbox. if you haters don't like him on the ps3, then i'll gladly take him on the xbox (i have nothing against the ps3, i actually love it. i hate the fanboys of both consoles though)

controversy for the sake of being controversial is pretty lame. if you create something that ends up being controversial or, its needed for a major plot point, thats one thing but if youre just out there just to make waves, then i think my money is better spent somewhere else.

I agree with the last two comments that this is not his unappreciated artist side coming out but rather something he truly feels is risky. But I think, based on his vague assertions in the past, and what they led to in games, his next project will not be something neccessarily risque. Besides how many companies or game makers have tried something that was considered over the top, but gained more fame from it (Rockstar with GTA and Manhunt, Ed Boon/John Tobias for Mortal Kombat). And even if it is too taboo for the US, well look at how taboo japanese games are, so he could at least remain in buisness there. I think he is going to do something he thinks will disappoint rather than disgust gamers.

Based solely on his one quote about everything coming together in his mind I would say that he is either A) Making a new ZOE game, but in a new genre (FPS? RPG? who knows?), or that B) he is making a new Metal Gear game and hopes he gets better fan feedback than MGS4. The only other option I can think is if the A, or B scenario end up exclusively for the Wii. I am leaning toward A but praying for B and C.

Thank you for being one of the few people here to realize that this isn't Kojima being a arty drama king (i.e., "my game didn't live up to expectations, I don't deserve to live!"), but that he's expressing concern that his subject matter may be so controversial that the game industry may force him out. Kudos.

So much so that he may never have a job in the videogame industry again due to being forced out because of public backlash.There will most likely be some kind of controversial story arc. Perhaps dealing with a taboo like incest, or preteen sex. Something where people may go "That's fucking sick! Burn him at the stake!" He's not being "emo" he's saying that he's taking a gamble to tell a story that may not be socially accepted which may cause him to be fired and not ever rehired by another company. Only time will tell what the subject matter will contain....I just hope he hasn't gone off the deep end and made a rape simulator.....

This sounds like the threaten-to-quit gimmick that pro-wrestling uses to make people care for another week. It'll probably be even less successful when Kojima uses it than when Vince McMahon has one of his wrestlers do it, since Kojima has already proven that his career announcements are hot air.

My guess? Based on what he found "controversial" in previous games (genetics combined with Japanese rivalry; nuclear energy; private militaries - oh noes, in the future, warmaking will be done for profit, and this will somehow destroy the world even though it's been that way since gold coins were invented) my money is on something pretty stupid.

The game will be 20 hours of heavy handed cutscenes about religion brainwashing the masses to do their bidding and 5 hours of gameplay of a resistance group (in mechs) fighting back.

Japan should change the rule if you screw up a game  you are expected to leave or be sent to the bottom.

It would be cool if the game he's referring to is a sequel to Zone of the Enders 2.  He does mention mechs, so it's possible. . .

Now i'm sort of scared of what he's conjuring up.  Hell, what if it's some echi title?  Just because it chanlenges a taboo doesn't make it a good thing.  In fact, it usually isn't.

whatever it is I hope its good. The metal gear solid series was great. Though I think MGS2 and 3 were better than 4. (no idea why people didnt like raiden, he was pretty awesome imo, loved it when he showed up in MGS4 I was thinking YH EAT YOUR WORDS HATERS!!! =P)

it'd be a risk since MGS4 was supposedly the end of the series (the lightning bolt thingy occurs between 2 and 4 so for is the latest)

Then it'd be a switcheroo where you play another person that tries hard to be snake but isn't quite blah blah

now that's a risk for the fans of MG and would potentially be disastrous if done wrong (sort of like a quick cash in with an MGS sequel name tagged to it)

I love the MGS series, I really do. But stop being so dramatic. I seriously doubt you would have to leave the industry. And by the way, shouldn't you be helping out with Castlevania?

If he makes another Raiden game, then yes, he should stop.  If he makes a tactical MGS game, then yes, he should stop.  Metal Gear isn't about giant mechs walking around.  It's more human than that.  If he loses touch with reality, that's the day he should quit making games.

I stop to think more about the actual gameplay though. This should be quite something.
