19th Annual Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, Newport Beach, CA - November 12, 2006

This exciting event featured more than 36 rowing races held at the Newport Aquatic Center (NAC). JWCF provided free sunscreen and a free sunscreen information and safety booklets to NARF participants and spectators to help prevent skin cancer. JWCF also presented the trophies to the men's and women's open eight winners!

First Annual Louie and the DUKE Classics Golf Tournament, Dinner/Auction, Team Roping, and BBQ, AZ - October 13, 14, and 15

This first annual event presented by Grande Living Magazine was a great success. Substantial funds were raised for JWCF and the American Cancer Society. View some photos from the weekend.

We would like to thank REAL Kiteboarding for their support in bringing awareness and education about the importance of sun protection to the sport of kite boarding. People involved in action sports are more at risk because of their time spent in the sun, especially kids and teenagers. JWCF and REAL are pro sport & pro fun and we want to make sure everyone has the tools they need to rip for many years to come.

Pacific Coast Triathlon, Orange County, CA - September 10, 2006

Team DUKE participated in the Pacific Coast Triathlon to show our support for everyone battling cancer. Several firefighters participated in this event in remembrance of September 11, 2001. JWCF donated sunscreen to all the event participants and everyone who visited the booth.

JWCF Sponsors Reel Recovery Retreats - Fall 2006

JWCF funded a grant to Reel Recovery, a national non-profit that conducts fly-fishing retreats for men fighting cancer. JWCF sponsored the Montana and Oregon Retreats in 2006, serving a total of 23 cancer survivors. The Oregon retreat was held at the Big K ranch on August 23-25, 2006. One of the participants Mel Platman commented, "I realized that I had helped men who question their futures with pain, agony and the prospect of an early death; with laughter, dignity and comradeship. I am awed and inspired by the experience."

JWCF Supports Cancer Survivor Lori Monroe in the Fight Against Lung Cancer - Summer 2006

JWCF supported Lori Monroe in her recent meeting with the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Lori discussed the significance of lung cancer with NCI.

JWCF Supports USS McClusky Sailors, San Diego, California - Summer 2006

JWCF donated sunscreen to the crew onboard the USS McClusky FFG-41 (Department of the Navy ship) in San Diego, California. Gary Tegel (SELRES Leading Petty Officer Engineering Division) used this opportunity to educate the sailors regarding the importance of sun protection and using sunscreen to help prevent skin cancer.

JWCF donated sunscreen to the junior lifeguards to encourage youth sun protection awareness.

JWCF donated sunscreen to the racers to encourage them to apply sunscreen as part of the their standard procedure for getting ready to race. The wind was blowing hard!

JWCF Supports the Mariner's Elementary School Fourth of July Celebration Held at Mariners Park, Newport Beach, California - July 4, 2006

This fun family event celebrated the Fourth of July with a parade featuring kids riding decorated bikes, games, music, and great food. It was a sunny summer day, so it was a perfect opportunity for Kean Coffee and JWCF staff to distribute sunscreen to families to encourage them to use sunscreen to help prevent skin cancer.

Congratulations to Team DUKE Member Brian Bosse for completing the Coeur d'Alene Ironman Triathlon in Idaho - June 25, 2006

Brian lost his grandfather Mel Bosse to Lymphoma and his uncle David Bosse to Melanoma, so Brian decided to take action and joined Team DUKE. Brian set his goals high, he decided to do one of the most challenging endurance events in the world, the Ironman triathlon. Brian successfully completed the race and dedicated his amazing performance to his grandfather and uncle and his family. Brian's performance showed a lot of courage, grit and strength and he will go down in history as the first Team DUKE Member to enter and complete an Ironman Triathlon. Congratulations Brian and thank you for inspiring everyone to fight cancer!

Livestrong Challenge Event in Orange County, CA - June 25, 2006

Thank you Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) for managing this wonderful event. JWCF worked with the LAF to bring the first annual Livestrong Challenge event to Orange County on June 25, 2006. JWCF was a local sponsor for the event. This inspirational event was a walk, run, and ride to fight cancer. We had a great time at our booth and met a lot of great people over the weekend. JWCF Supports UCLA and Blue Cross of California's Continuing Medical Education (CME) Symposium

JWCF has awarded a grant to the Office of Continuing Medical Education, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Blue Cross of California for a CME symposium and online activity, "Late Effects of Cancer Treatment and Survivorship: Strategies for Primary Care and Oncology Care Providers." The symposium will be held at the Marina del Rey Marriott on June 24, 2006 and the online activity will be made available in August 2006. The program will target primary care and oncology care providers and has been designed to promote provider understanding regarding late effects of cancer treatment and survivorship and their role in long-term surveillance in order to reduce adverse health outcomes of cancer survivors. The symposium will feature Patricia Ganz, MD, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and UCLA School of Public Health; Lisa Diller, MD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; and Betty Farrell, RN, PhD, FAAN, City of Hope National Medical Center. This initiative will directly benefit the health and well being of patients by responding to their broader health care needs and improving the way health care is delivered.

Hobie/Hennessey's Waterman Challenge, Dana Point, CA - May 20th, 2006

Thank you Chuck Patterson for working with JWCF to bring sun protection awareness to the participants of the Hobie/Hennessey's Waterman Challenge. JWCF donated co-branded JWCF and Himaya sunscreen and educational booklets to event participants to increase sun protection awareness. This fun event included several categories of waterman events such as paddle boarding, stand-up, dory, and others.

Livestrong Day at 3 Thirty 3 Restaurant, Newport Beach, CA - May 17, 2006

Athletes and cancer survivors who are registered for the June 25, 2006 Livestrong Challenge met with Lance Armstrong Foundation and JWCF staff at 3 Thirty 3 Restaurant in Newport Beach, CA. The evening was very inspiring as we discussed cancer survivorship and the upcoming Livestrong Challenge Event. It was great to meet everyone. Thank you 3 Thirty 3 for hosting this event.

Team DUKE Bike Race

Team DUKE Mountain Biking - 24 Hours of Adrenaline, Idyllwild, CA - April 29/30, 2006

Team DUKE competed in the 24 Hours of Adrenaline Mountain Bike Race. The five person team raised funds to help JWCF fight cancer. This was the first Team DUKE mountain bike team. Team DUKE completed 22 laps in 24 hours for a total distance of approximately 200 miles and a total elevation gain of 28,000 feet. Team DUKE Member Chris Davis is a skin cancer survivor. John Wayne's grandson, Patrick Munoz, was also on the Team. JWCF provided Himaya sunscreen at the event to encourage everyone to wear sunscreen to help prevent skin cancer. The weather was beautiful and the team had a great time talking to people and cheering for all the riders. Team DUKE Running - Boston Marathon - April 17, 2006

Team DUKE Member Danny Slaton ran the Boston Marathon on April 17, 2006. He was the first Team DUKE Member to run the Boston Marathon. Danny wore his Team DUKE jersey during the race and had a great race. Thank you, for helping JWCF fight cancer.
