James DeGale backing himself to 'make history' in Andre Dirrell world title fight

"I honestly think you're going to see the best performance of my career," said the 2008 Olympic gold medallist, who has been training in Miami

James DeGale claims he is thriving under the pressure of trying to make British boxing history.

DeGale will attempt to become the first British Olympic champ to win a world title when he faces American Andre Dirrell in Boston for the vacant IBF super-middleweight title on Saturday week.

"I honestly think you're going to see the best performance of my career," said the 2008 Olympic gold medallist, who has been finishing off his training in Miami.

"This one is going to top it off by winning the world title and making history. I thrive on the pressure.

"I'm a buzz fighter. I like the big audience and the big lights. I'm feeling relaxed, chilled and can't wait to perform."

DeGale, 29, insists he is not bothered about facing Dirrell in his homeland, claiming he will have plenty of fans in Boston.

"I'm looking forward to it," said the Hammersmith fighter. "I've boxed at big shows in front of 10, 20,000 people. I'm looking forward to boxing in Boston and there are lots of Irish and English people over there.

"My time is here, next Saturday. I've trained very hard and you lot are in for a treat. I honestly think it will be a hell of a fight, one that I'm confident of winning. Fasten your seatbelts it should be good."
