SF drama based on the famous Walton case, one of the best documented cases of alien abduction. I've always found such stories scary, so it could not be missing that this would appeal to me. A group of lumberjacks witness the presence of a UFO in the forest, and one of them disappears without a trace. The village community believes they killed their companion. The scene in the spaceship I found very well constructed and terrifying and is definitely the highlight of the film. The direction is also very successful, but the actors who play here are unfortunately not the best (with all due respect to James Garner of course). Although sometimes unbalanced, I did not disappoint this film.

mwa.

I found Fire in the Sky to feel a lot like some kind of film from a director who wants to imitate Spielberg. It wasn't until well into the second half that this feeling started to stop after seeing a sequence in which I don't recognize Spielberg at all. Furthermore, the film also feels very strongly as a whole that could have been made 10 years before the actual release. Very outdated stylization.

There is little wrong with the effects and when the film turns out a bit more exciting, it immediately hits the mark. The well-known sequence that a film like this manages to make is now well known among film enthusiasts, I assume. Scenes like that distinguish this film strongly and bring back the attention I lost under all that boring posturing. In addition, the powerlessness during such a scene also works well. Nice and ruthless. Makes a film like this very special of course.

That is also my main point of criticism. Fire in the Sky shows us an interesting dilemma, but told by extremely boring actors. Some members are even well known, but are made almost unrecognizable. No character manages to be even remotely interesting and the conversations drop dead. The total lack of atmosphere during these scenes makes the film a tiring experience.

Fortunately, Lieberman manages to compensate for that with some remarkably coarse and atmospheric scenes. Sometimes on the edge of your seat, of course. That's why I think it's such a shame that the rest of the movie takes so long. The result is therefore half. When the film unpacks, the interest is immediately there. When it stays in the background, the interest is immediately gone.

Bill Pope makes the movie bearable. Very nicely shot, with the scene on the alien ship as the highlight. Unfortunately, the movie takes itself way too seriously and they're stuck with a fantasist's stupid book. Nevertheless, 3 stars.
