He feels his mother is lying to him and is determined to find out what she does with the other women on the beach at night.

Enjoy again.

The link with Innocence is clear, but the film is also different enough to stand on its own. A perfect second film for Hadzihalilovic. It just took a while before she finally got over the bridge with the second one.

Especially darker and more on the nose. With Innocence it was not so clear where the uneasy feeling came from, with Evolution you don't have to look far behind it. Fortunately, it is brought to the surface very strongly, so that the film loses little intrigue compared to Innocence.

Hadzihalilovic still reveals little in terms of setting and context. You can do it yourself again. It leads to a mysterious, dark and somewhat uncomfortable film, a great addition to her first. Let's hope the third isn't that long in coming.

4.0* and a extended review

More drowsy than mysterious, uncomfortable and oppressive. Little material is forced to stretch into a full-length feature film. The intended nasty atmosphere didn't bother me much and felt too created. The whole of life on the island also seemed incredible to me in its entirety. What remains is the mystery of the origin of the bio-engineered? ladies with their remarkable reproduction methods, fishy eyes and octopus-like rings that make them reminiscent of mermaids, good cinematography with some nice close-up shots and gruesome scenes in which strange embryos and a red starfish pass by. I was personally barely intrigued by all of this and unfortunately was not sucked into the created world. It's all been so bare and left open to interpretation that I simply wasn't triggered by it anymore. Thematically and stylistically all of this has undoubtedly been well thought out, but it didn't work enough. As I kind of felt it coming during the movie you are left with a lot of unanswered questions at the end. Why do the ladies behave so unsociable? What is the reason for their isolation. Why are there no older men on the island? Why the dirty food? What is the system behind the reproduction machine and who controls it? The final scene happily throws in a few more questions. Are the boys sent there to work at a certain age? Of course you can all fill in the answers yourself, but I don't feel like it because I feel like I've been sent off to a crawl. The annoying branch of the mystery genre. In my opinion not enough for a big enough.

Tough seat. I love mystery and you will certainly get that here. A touch of absurdism (all those same mothers and boys) is also fine. But slow. When it is finally clear what kind of craziness we are dealing with, kudos for the thought, the film does not pick up on but continues to simmer. No tension, no new angles, no twists. I had a lot of trouble keeping my focus and that doesn't happen often. The beautiful (underwater) images can no longer save the day.
