Solid.

Although quite dated, the solidity and atmosphere of the film has remained. The whodunnit is straightforward and, in fact, has little mystery surrounding it. There are 4 striking figures walking around, and voilà, let's wait and see who it will be.

Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes doesn't devastate me. He tries to keep it spry with some mannerisms, and maybe that was the case in 1959, but today I find it a bit clumsy. The tall Christopher Lee is much more charismatic as the main supporting actor.

Furthermore, it is especially the action scenes that stand out because of their dated look. It's all a bit bumbling and fake. The film could also have been set a little less indoors. It feels a bit soapy. The soundtrack is very bombastic according to the spirit of the times, but it does have something, such a trick from that time.

Quite a difference with later Sherlock Holmes films such as the Disney classic and the version with Robert Downey Jr. where a good guy is pitted against a bad guy with Professor Ratigan and Professor Moriarty respectively. In the 1959 movie we have a good old mystery. Holmes does have his characteristics (pipe, hat, ...) but is above all a detective with an analytical insight. Not even a parody of itself with tiny puzzle pieces that no one could have solved. He's just a very intelligent detective, motivated in his craft. dr. Watson isn't just any helper either.

The film focuses on the story, which is close to the books. With a colorful Sherlock Holmes in a setting that hangs between mystery and horror. Made on a budget, but it knows how to get creative with it. It hovers between cult and kitch, but it fits this genre. It gives the film an extra atmosphere of Victorian England. Lovely to see.
