When the successful British ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is hired to write the memoirs of former Prime Minister of Great Britain Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), it's the opportunity of a lifetime. At least that's what the writer's agent says. During the assignment, however, he stumbles upon a lot of secrets, which entangles the ghostwriter in a web of political intrigue.

I didn't really like it that much. Polanski's The Ghost Writer is the film adaptation of the book by thriller author Robert Harris. The film will never be memorable or exceptional to be honest. Polanksi has something else in his oeuvre. A film that is known as a thriller, but found it rather boring and long-winded with Polanksi spinning the plot too long.

In terms of atmosphere and setting it is fine, for the rest also quite slick, all with decent acting performances.

An unnamed writer [Ewan McGregor] lands a lucrative contract to write the memoirs of Adam Lang [Pierce Brosnan] just as the former actor and prime minister comes under scrutiny for alleged involvement in a controversial deal with terrorists. The writer manages to make himself invisible enough to do his own research into Adam Lang's past, but in doing so finds himself in a wasp's nest that puts himself in danger. Polanski still proves to be a master of the paranoia thriller and, thanks to the flawless cast, manages to create an oppressive atmosphere until the shocking end.

This film has to make do with the rock-solid esteem of McGregor. It rarely gets really exciting. There is a hidden tension in the film because McGregor has to be wary because he has to get through a web of intrigue himself. Pierce Brosnan actually has a small part but if you can play James Bond you can also play a slick politician. All in all, I think the film is definitely overrated. The film is also a bit too long in my opinion, although it never really gets boring.
