“Every shadow no matter how deep is threatened by morning light.”

Superb movie. A beautiful human story about death, mourning, love and letting go of your loved one, but The Fountain also clearly bears the stamp of Aronofsky. Visually, the film is a masterpiece, and three stories are almost carelessly intertwined. I had expected another brain teaser in advance, but the story was surprisingly easy to follow. Only the spiritual and philosophical third story is really open to multiple interpretations. And Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz once again show why they are two of my favorite actors.

Nice review.

It helps that there has been some time in between, so the expectations are just a bit more realistic. I still don't think it's a new Pi or Requiem, but it is a film that is neatly its own thing and yet is quite unique in its own way.

It is especially the future segment that appeals the most, but that should not come as a surprise. As wacky as the special effects sound (microphotography and all), it just works amazingly well. The film takes a while to get going, but when all the pawns are put down it is a fairly impressive sprint towards a great finale.

Aronofsky is still a great director. Not without minor outbursts and those who expect subtle cinema should better ignore it, but he always manages to make something unique, making The Fountain a valuable addition to his oeuvre.

Impressive.

Possibly the best Darren Aronofsky movie I've seen so far. Less is more, in his case. The Fountain is quieter than some of his other films. Master too and at times even subdued. After a while the three stories blend together nicely. One will certainly get a bit more symbolism out of it than the other. I'm not much of a digger myself. The fact that the film tells a story about loss is enough for me. Making ends meet is (basically) not too difficult either.

Apart from that beautiful story, the film makes an audiovisual impression. That might be an even bigger plus. Visually, the film looks really beautiful. Every epoch, by the way, but the future really stands out. That world looks very beautiful. Great designs and ditto effects. Good choice also not to go all in on effects that rolled out of the computer, but also to use some other techniques. A choice made to better withstand the test of time, or so I read. Very successful.

Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz do a decent job, but are actually totally subordinate to the whole. Neither can walk with the spotlight at any time. Weisz has a slightly too scanty role for that. Jackman's role has a little more to it. The, albeit corny, musical support, especially during the final, is worth a final mention. With the more beautiful film music I know and the icing on the cake. Best movie I've seen in a long time and I honestly didn't expect that.

4.5
