Shanghai plot

In late 1941, secret agent Paul Soames (John Cusack) arrives in Shanghai, China, to investigate the murder of a colleague friend. The city is almost completely in the hands of the Japanese and the mutual tension is palpable. To solve the case, Paul must delve deep into the mysterious world of the local rulers, but without making enemies. The latter seems impossible when Paul has an affair with Anna (Gong Li), the wife of a powerful Chinese gangster boss.

Beautiful, atmospheric film with an interesting lighting of the WW2 with an excellent supporting cast, a pity that the boring Cusack has the leading role. The film must have been mainly about the setting and atmosphere, as Cusack makes a mediocre couple with Li Gong.

A combination of green and yellow lighting, old vehicles, soldiers, cigarettes, espionage and smart suits at formal parties. John Cusack, he plays great but like a Ben Stiller or Nicolas Cage it will never be my favorite actor. Perhaps because he resembles my dentist in appearance, but also because of his determined - and partly arrogant character with which he manages to handle almost every situation in a cold-blooded way. The script is well put together and there is enough persuasiveness with the help of a well-maintained soundtrack and the many atmospheric settings.

The setting, the Film-Noir-like atmosphere and the stunning Li Gong give me an IMDb 8/10.

This film also evokes memories of The Shanghai Gesture (1941) with the irresistible Gene Tierney and of the Buck Danny albums no. 3 to 6. Se, Jie (2007) also evokes this atmosphere.

This gripping story is beautifully filmed and well acted. The Blu-ray (which doesn't contain extras by the way) has now been seen 3 times.
