A lot messier and less stylish than Suspiria. Argento also seems to want to put the plot first, while the muddled and illogical script never creates any connection with the characters. The finely portrayed murders feel way too random in a long-winded plot where people mainly walk through long corridors and look serious. Positive highlights are the underwater scene and the creatively designed murders.

Inferno is in almost every way the lesser brother of Suspiria. The intriguing blue-(red) tones once again guarantee a film with a stylish appearance, were it not for the fact that the dusty back rooms in New York lend themselves less to Argento's arts than that gruesome dance school from Inferno's predecessor. I found the score of Suspiria masterly and scary at the same time. What is particularly striking here is that the music is moderately dosed. Some sequences (I'm thinking of the Latin choral violence in the basement, towards the end) miss their effect due to musical excess, other sequences lack tension (and that was never the case in Suspiria).

Comparison with Inferno's predecessor is almost inevitable, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I did enjoy this thematically related sequel. Atmosphere and cinematography do the work in this cinematic nightmare, the so characteristic choices in the decor divert attention from the incoherent and also somewhat fragmentary plot.

I'll keep looking forward to more from Argento, but if I go back to this diptych later, I'll probably quickly ignore Inferno.

Why I like Inferno (1980) much better than Suspiria (1977) .

1. Better mounting : smoother and more dynamic . Perfect and modern , more refined film technique .

2. Less monotonous and more creative : set in multiple places and Inferno also reminds me of the old classic detective / film noir movies . Multiple genres in 1 .

3. Much more exciting/mystical. Underwater scene in the basement is brilliant and joyful .
