Honogurai Mizu no Soko Kara plot
Yoshimi Matsubara and her ex-husband are engaged in an uphill battle over the custody of her five-year-old daughter Ikuko. Despite her psychiatric past, she hopes to be stronger by finding work and renting her own apartment. However, due to her work, she will occasionally have to neglect her daughter and in addition there appears to be a large damp spot on the ceiling of the apartment and the caretaker is an old, lazy man. As her stay progresses, the place starts to get bigger and Yoshimi also finds a red children's bag on the roof of the building that she can't seem to get rid of. Also, Ikuko begins to behave more and more strangely and she gets an "imaginary" girlfriend, who may not be as imaginary as it first seems.

Shows comparisons to Ju-On, but weirder and less good. As horror too weak and the drama does not quite come out well. Too bad, because I expected quite a bit from it. Towards the end it straightens its back slightly, but not enough to eventually score a pass. Audiovisually, as so often, perfectly fine.

Interesting, mysterious horror film in which the story is steadily built up to the climax.
Especially setting and atmosphere are the trump cards of this film. It doesn't get really scary, also because the Asian films about ghosts don't really surprise you anymore. Although I've seen quite a few, this one still eluded me. Still a 7/10.

I had high hopes for this, but maybe I should have polled some opinions here at MovieMeter first, because then the many negative reactions would have warned me. It all looks beautiful, and the playing of both mother and daughter was excellent, but otherwise everything developed not only slowly but also without atmosphere and above all predictable (if that girl stays by the bubbling bathtub you already know that two hands are going to appear to pull her over?), and the usual mysterious ghost girl got bored with me after a while too. Mediocre.
