Witte Wieven plot
"Prayers won't save you"
In a Puritan village, Frieda is blamed by the community for being childless. The woman then throws herself into prayer and rituals. When she returns unscathed from the forbidden forest that surrounds the village, she is condemned as a devil worshiper. Coincidentally, Frieda has found a new belief in the dark forces of the forest.

Like this! What a pleasant surprise! Koolhoven has saved the best for last, but of course all credits go to the director and his team. Wonderful atmosphere that feels authentic, partly due to the dialect that is convincingly presented. Strong camera work, penetrating soundtrack but above all visually incredibly powerful. Seeing this gives you renewed hope in Dutch cinema, this director definitely deserves a bigger stage. *4.0

Atmospheric horror film and a real relief when you find out that this is a home-grown production. It is refreshing to see the dedication of director Didier Konings when it comes to decorating his sets, whereby attention has even been paid to the choice of language. The film feels wonderfully authentic and handles the horror moments well, which are particularly impressive during the nighttime outings in the woods. Left and right, more attention could have been paid to the build-up of tension and I didn't think Anneke Sluiters' role was very noteworthy, but Witte Wieven is fascinating from start to finish. I also noticed the acting of Len Leo Vincent in particular, who is completely absorbed in his character and appears strangely convincing. The imaginative and detailed visual representation made me as a viewer long for more, because what Konings does here remains very clever. The fact that the atmosphere is not consistently maintained and the pressure is not increased very much prevents me from awarding the film a higher grade, but within the Koolhoven Presenteert series this is definitely my favorite.

Reminiscent of the VVitch indeed, but I think this film is a lot more enjoyable. Partly due to the length, but also certainly due to the atmosphere, which may be dark and gloomy, but still just within the acceptable range. Nicely played and well made for that small budget. However, the film certainly shouldn't have been longer. 3.0*.
