The Innocents plot

"Apparitions? Evils? Corruptions?"

In the 19th century, British governess Miss Giddens arrives at a family where she will take care of the two children Flora and Myles. The children seem very sweet, but Miss Giddens begins to suspect that there is something scary behind those cute faces. After several incidents, which show that the children indeed have something evil in them, the housekeeper informs Miss Giddens that evil spirits are involved.

After the disappointments of "The City of the Dead" and especially "Carnival of Souls", I hoped that "The Innocents" would finally give me some more atmosphere, depth and above all a better story and more interesting characters. From the beginning I had hoped the movie would be like Nicole Kidman's "The Others" and I think I kind of got that. Of course there is more than 30 years between these films so I think it is normal that "The Others" had a few more scares. But I think the setting in "The Innocents" is great, even more because it was filmed in black and white. Not so much what happens but the whole environment, the lighting creates tension. The apparitions that Mrs. Kerr sees are menacing. A strong story too and a very daring theme for the time and maybe even more now. Subtly done and the wording is beautiful. I can understand that some people may find it boring, but if you start watching the film with the creepy attitude you will be disappointed. However, I took everything and that tune and lyrics from "The Willow Waly" are sweet and creepy at the same time. Get excited to read the book now. I have the DVD version and I can certainly recommend the "filmed introduction" which gives interesting info about the background of the film. Definitely don't watch the trailer before watching the movie, it reveals too much.

Great film in itself (thanks to baspls for the 'tip' at The Others (2001) , indeed a comparable atmosphere and (distant) story, with fortunately a completely different denouement, so that both are perfectly viewable, my preference remains with 5* for The Others). The atmosphere is also good in this film, and there is quite a bit of acting, sometimes overacted, as is often the case in the style of older films. I was at a good 3.5* the whole time, were it not for the fact that it is somewhat repetitive in the long run and the dubious is also retained at the end. Somehow I found the ending to be a big disappointment that cut the score off by half. After letting it sink in a bit, the end itself is okay, but it still leaves me with a feeling of "is that all?" behind. For me it also came across as a bit of a plot hole because the innuendo points in a completely different direction, so that the behavior of the children afterwards does not match that ending. 3*

An old-fashioned Gothic ghost story that doesn't have to be pure horror, but it is atmospheric with a large Gothic house, wonderful black-and-white cinematography and stylish characters. The film is perhaps not immediately terrifying, but rather haunting. The tension is well increased and the beautiful Deborah Kerr takes care of that. Strong movie!
