Saw it yesterday during Horror Night, better than expected.

When I saw the trailer, it didn't appeal to me at all.

But the film itself is really not that bad.

Story was good, well filmed, occasionally scary.

But it is not as scary as some claim. But that is purely to attract people.

It is one of the better horror films of recent years.

In the horror classic The Omen, a former American ambassador discovered that his adopted child was a devil child fathered by a jackal. This prequel shows how that conception came about and is set in Rome in 1971, when the nightlife was dominated by disco and young people went crazy to the music of Boney M (sic!). American nun (and former problem child) Margaret [Nell Tiger Free] has come to a convent in Rome at the invitation of her former mentor Cardinal Lawrence [Bill Nighy], where she is welcomed with open arms. I suspect that many fans of The Omen like me already know how it will end, especially when key scenes (hint: “All for you” and David Warner's 'farewell')[/ spoiler] be copied with impunity! Stevenson is good at creating sinister images and Mark Korven's attempt to match Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar-winning score is commendable. But sinister images still make a scary movie and Nell Tiger Free has a scene you have to admire, even if it's more bizarre than terrifying. The screenplay has a good connection with The Omen and even paves the way for a spin-off, but the emphatically noted fake scare effects in the first half are attempts to disguise the fact that the first half in particular is long-winded.

Atmospheric prequel film by director Arkasha Stevenson, who clearly knows what to do with the more idiosyncratic horror moments. To a certain extent it is clear that the makers no longer had source material to draw substantive strength from, but the compensation with hallucinatory images is more than enough in my opinion. I'm not a big fan of the original film, so the increased focus on the visuals was very welcome for me. It is a pity that the leading role of Nell Tiger Free is very convincing and the ridiculous look of Ralph Ineson (whoever approved his hairstyle in this production can feel free to kick themselves) causes unintentional hilarity. The first half is a bit slower according to the norm and mainly serves as a build-up, but it is a shame that the screenplay here neglects the actually interesting aspects. For example, the character of Nicole Sorace is intriguing, but does not get off the ground at all due to a lack of focus. The second half, on the other hand, gives more of the impression of a dreamy trip, in which the horror images in particular are very prominent. After much consideration, I decided to give the benefit of the doubt with regard to the final grade, as the story itself was not very interesting. I also wonder what the makers saw in the (lack of) acting talent of Sônia Braga, who plays a hopelessly dreary supporting role.
