The Shining plot

"A masterpiece of modern horror."

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is a writer with writer's block. When he is hired for a job as caretaker at the prestigious Overlook Hotel, located in a remote location in the Colorado mountains, he sees it as the ideal opportunity to find inspiration and finish his book. Plus, it's the perfect place for him, his wife Wendy (Shelly Duvall) and his son Danny (Danny Lloyd) to unwind. In all his arrogance, he ignores the rumours that evil forces might be living in the hotel, and the gruesome story about the previous caretaker who went mad and then gruesomely murdered his family.

A few days off between New Years and a moment to catch up on movies but Stanley Kubrick decided otherwise because I re-watched The Shining (new 4K blu ray release with the 144 minutes) and that was enough material to start the holiday to fill. After all, it is a film that harbors different interpretations and theories. While everyone was already drawing up a list of good intentions, I immersed myself in that metaphysical reflection of the past and present, admired how Kubrick slowly observed that family meltdown and I too got lost in the hotel constructed as a labyrinth. Could I this time consider certain interpretations given to the film by many as fact? Because what is this about? About the Native (Indian) American genocide? Kubrick likes to wallow in mystery with The Shining. According to opponents of the film to spew fog so that no one can see that the film is an empty box. What to think about those continuity errors, whether intentional or not? You can find them all on youtube or IMDB but I'll pick one (1 but) because I think this goes in the direction of a conscious choice for a control freak like Kubrick nl vb Danny plays with his cars, pattern of the carpet changes after the tennis ball has landed on Danny. What about that man in the bear suit? And with the map of the hotel? Apparently the office of the office manager would be impossible to enter? Days and nights pass but there is no clarity. In the distance I can already hear people counting down. The year 2019 is coming to a close but the spirit of The Shining is still very much alive and won't let go of me. Is this a movie with 100 doors and no exit?

Man is a wonderful being. And unfortunately often not in the positive sense of the word. When I read Bounze's "wise" comment, I wonder aloud whether this is yet another case of kicking against the (opinion of the) established order. The user throws in some expletives that in my eyes, and luckily for me in the eyes of many, many film connoisseurs, are sheer nonsense. If there is anywhere good acting in a horror film, it is in this masterpiece. And especially by an inimitable Nicholson. The tension in the film and the atmosphere it creates (homage to legend Kubrick) are truly unparalleled. I wish I could watch this movie every day. I'm sorry (or actually no sorry at all), but people who will attach a rating of 0.5 to this, no, I can't and don't want to take that seriously.

I've been putting off a review of The Shining for a very long time, but I wanted to have the time to watch it with Doctor Sleep. It was the first time I saw the American release and I really liked it even better.

Of course I am also full of praise for Jack Nicholson, who puts down one of the best performances ever in a film. What an incredible palette of facial expressions and facial expressions that man has. It's fascinating to watch. Nobody puts down a fool like him. That scene where he threateningly meets Duvall on the hotel steps in a first attempt to kill her was grandiose.

In any case, I think The Shining is a very special ghost film in the sense that there are also a lot of psychological elements that make the characters susceptible to the madness that permeates the entire hotel. The boy is gifted with "the shining" or clairvoyance, and Jack Torrance is an unstable ex-alcoholic who is also anything but a loving husband and father. This extended version makes that clearer. Wendy is mentally the strongest character who sees very soberly what is happening around her.

The Shining remains a creepy film with some mythical scenes that work fine to this day, especially the final scenes. Also the many handsome tracking shots are worth mentioning, such as with Danny's tricycle. Technically very well thought out and planned.
