Sisters is clearly based on Hitchcock's Psycho. So for me, lights immediately started flashing that a plot twist was coming. Of course, De Palma does not make a one-on-one remake, so it is still interesting in terms of concept. Black and white is also not present here. I have to say that I was less caught by the atmosphere. It wasn't mysterious enough like Psycho with an eerie tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

De Palma's typical split screens are used at the right times and create tension in their own way. I thought the beginning was the strongest, but in the last half hour my attention slackened. The ending was a bit chaotic even though I was tired too. Not De Palma's best film, of course, but not his worst either. Meanwhile arrived at number 17.

Boring.

Don't be fooled by the horror designation, this film can hardly be called a thriller. Mystery is a bit more appropriate, although the film is so predictable that you don't have to expect too much from it. In any case, you can see the twists coming from afar.

De Palma unpacks with a few nice split screens, and despite the fact that the predictability is high, the reveals are still well executed. But it pretty much ends there. The acting is very poor, visually it's thin, it's not exciting at all and the horror (a stabbing, that's about it) is tame and pretty fake.

A film that used to be tense and/or surprising, but in the meantime you've seen the trick so many times and the execution is so very average that it hardly manages to stick. De Palma remains one of those directors who seems to have enough potential, but actually rarely delivers a good film. This one is also a sturdy fabric.

1.5*

Worth it just for the score composed by Bernard Herrmann. Undoubtedly one of the most influential film composers ever. Long-time collaborator of Hitchcock. Here he proves that he has not lost any of his strength in the seventies. Again not a coincidence to drop the name Hitchcock here because of course it is known that B. De Palma is a Hitchcock adept. And in this early work - apparently his first thriller - this is abundantly reflected (Rope, Rear Window, Psycho are clear references). Fortunately, it goes beyond a copy paste because it is clearly a film with different layers. It already starts with the opening in which the viewer is placed in the perspective of the voyeur - via the TV program Peeping Tom - with which De Palma perhaps wants to indicate what film is essentially about. Afterwards, a story develops in which all kinds of question marks bubble up that find an answer at the end. The context is a social mode in which Jennifer Salt, as a journalist - a woman and one with attitude - conducts her own investigation. She is opposed by the old reactionary world: the male revanchist police force, her own mother who does not understand her ... She is also completely alone in her search. The end of the film comes across as quite cynical. There is not really a solution for the reason for JS's search: the 'racist' murder of the African-American. The fiery and committed Jennifer Salt has been silenced for good by William Finley's evil hypnosis. With that, the hope for a better world seems symbolically dashed to the ground.
