A creditable seventh part in the series, somewhat different in terms of plot from the previous parts, but largely effectively realized. A lot of scary moments anyway. Towards the end things go a bit off the rails and the makers go for the grand gesture where a more subtle approach might have worked better, but by then the film has proven itself to be one of the better parts in the series. Not that that says much.

I do have a soft spot for found footage, but above all I didn't think this was a bad sequel to the series. Entertaining, exciting and sometimes scary. Solid work.

In 2007, Paranormal Activity was a special sensation. A minimalist film that, after The Blair Witch Project and Rec, blew a breath of fresh air through the found footage landscape. Unfortunately, the great success of the fresh film quickly led to uninspired sequels. This seventh installment of the franchise is no exception.

The film is set in a secluded Amish community. Other than the title, the film has nothing to do with the franchise narratively. That offers hope. It will quickly be crushed. Next of Kin presents a bit of The Witch, a bit of Wicker Man and a bit of Blair Witch and wraps itself in a mystery that is not surprising at all.

The only successful thing about the film is the sad and misty backdrop against which the events take place. That is the only element that generates a disturbing atmosphere.

What else. Naturally, the film is chock full of jump scares, which you can see coming from a mile away. There is no subtle build-up of tension. Naturally, the characters get on your nerves. The camera is not handled stably. An open ending raises fears of more sequels.

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin is uninspired found footage that consists of a lot of jump scares and a lot of ideas collected from other films. This part certainly doesn't revive the doomed franchise.
