A week or so ago I had reviewed The Ghost and the Darkness (1996), and I thought 'let me see some more movies about those looking for two lions'. And somewhere (wikipedia I think?) it was mentioned as being based on or inspired by the same book.

Well, that inspiration seems to have stopped when there are also two lions here. Furthermore, it is a sleep-inducing collection of clichés, in which even the beautiful nature in the area is hardly used. Bland stuff, not worth it.

After seeing two Lion King movies, my girlfriend still hadn't seen enough lions and suggested we see this movie.

Well what can be said about it. It's obviously low budget, but doesn't make up for that with originality, leaving little left. The plot is of course nonsensical if you only know anything about lions, some scenes reminded me a bit of Jurassic Park, but with lions, the action scenes look awful, because people just shake a lot with a camera so that a lot is suggested, but you don't see anything, in short, a cheap trick to mask the lack of budget. And of course the outcome is predictable in advance, including who survives and who doesn't: the family survives, all other characters die. Very safe choices and therefore not very original.

In short, this is not much and one would do well to skip this safari. 0.5*.

Excellent viewing material in the otherwise often not very good 'killer animal' subgenre.

The first half hour is especially strong. Nice location and good camera work so that the lions are portrayed quite menacingly. We often get to see real lions in action (also during action scenes) (that is, real animals, that in itself is a relief in this subgenre) and the moments when CGI is used, it is convincing (especially if you consider that 'Prey ' is already 14 years old).

At times it is a bit too predictable and bland, and that also keeps me from giving a broader pass, but in general Prey is a successful film that offers enough for an evening sitting on the couch.
