Considered one of the most influential film noirs along with Double Indemnity. I have to say that this is by far the most complex noir I've seen so far, and I had to pause several times to catch up with the plot. It doesn't help that the main character is the quintessential witty PI who squeezes imagery and other puns into just about every sentence. The hasty, poetic undertone that characterizes the dialogues is usually amusing, but can easily sidetrack you. This shifts the focus and before you realize it you tumble into a black hole and sink to the bottom. I often thought of The Big Lebowski, a kind of neo noir that parodies many features of film noir. Think of the golddigger (here a femme fatale), the dream sequence, the overly complicated storylines and the many secondary characters, each with their own twist. I also see the influence on other neo noirs like Sin City, for example the scene where Marlowe wakes up in the private clinic and orders herself to stay awake. There may be many details that have escaped attention and it clearly takes more than one viewing to absorb them all. I now unfortunately felt the interest waning during the last act, a result of the sheer amount of information being flung at my head. In the long run it becomes too much of a good thing. This is a film that undoubtedly benefits from a review. The acting is acceptable, the sets are atmospheric and it is beautifully portrayed. However, I am missing something that takes the whole thing to the next level.

This film is chock full of all the clichés or tropes of the noir genre. Sometimes that makes for uninspired junk, sometimes it makes for a perfect example of the genre. For me, this film belonged to the 2nd group. Dick Powell was not known for his moody roles, but rather for lighter entertainment. His Marlowe is therefore a bit more fun than the average detective, but I found it a refreshing and entertaining nuance. No false notes in the other roles either.

Unlike the above, I could handle the movie and I found the plot manageable, not more confusing than other noirs. I thought the movie grew and got more and more fun towards the end. Also something not everyone in this film is unsympathetic, which is not always the case in these types of films and the ending is also not immediately common. Like some others, I thought Marlowe's fever dream was a highlight
