High Sierra plot

"HE KILLED... and there on the crest of Sierra's highest crag... HE MUST BE KILLED!"

Shortly after being released from prison, veteran bank robber Roy "Mad Dog" Earle hangs out with two fairly young criminals, Red and Babe. Roy also gets to know the former dancer Marie, the attractive girlfriend of the abusive Red. Roy, Bob and Red plan to rob a hotel. On his way to California, Roy meets young Velma, daughter of the poor Baughmam family. As Marie falls in love with Roy, his interest in Velma grows and he even pays for her clubfoot surgery. The heist at the hotel goes wrong by the inexperienced Red and Babe. Roy flees into the Sierra Mountains with Marie. When Roy finds out that the police are after him, he puts Marie out of the car on the way.

Excellent film in which a man who has just been released from prison immediately takes part in another robbery. An entertaining film as enough happens. The main character is certainly not your average gangster (quite layered even). Humphrey Bogart puts it down excellently. A fairly exciting chase as a finale (even though you know it can only end one way).

In terms of story, a generic crime film. A gangster is taken out of jail to commit a robbery. The film is the build-up to the robbery and its consequences, where you know it won't end too well. The film has to rely on the acting, with Bogart in particular doing well by giving his character some humanity, but Lupino also holds his own.

It's strange the Hays code wants crimes to be punished, but it's apparently less creepy that 40-year-old Bogart is hot on Joan Leslie, who was only 16 (maybe even 15 during the filming) and her whole family is after him encourage you to go for it.

A special gangster film: when Roy comes out of prison, he does not immediately go to the pub or the arcade, but he first wants to see grass, trees and children playing. Well, after that he immediately starts worrying about a job, but that rural and therefore spatial approach that is maintained practically throughout the entire film (and which is emphasized by the occasionally quite romantic music by Adolph Deutsch) forms a nice contrast to the oppressive griminess of the usual big city gangster movie. The short but sweet documentary on my Classic Cinema Collection DVD does a great job of explaining Bogart's ability to show both the soft and hard sides of Roy "Mad Dog" Earle, and it's understandable that he steamrolled through this film. to Warner Brothers' A category. The movie itself, in my opinion, doesn't quite succeed in successfully combining the harshness of the gang and the sentimentality of the hillbilly family.
