"Power Packed Picture!"

Violence is the order of the day in the harsh Westgate prison. Power, in fact, rests in the hands of the villainous jailer Munsey. However, when Munsey drives one of them to suicide, the rest has had enough.

A title that you can take literally. For that time, it comes across as a noir that occasionally does a lot of housekeeping. The first outburst, about the collaborator, is immediately a striking scene. Hammering noise and a number of prisoners who calmly and coolly hand out their rough punishment. It turns out to be a stark contrast with how Dassin then portrays his prison customers.

No boys belong here, especially not when a few melodramatic flashbacks are discussed. You can dismiss it as a fantasy of people who like to make reality look a little nicer than it actually is. Doesn't seem like a crazy reflex for those stuck in a suffocating prison like this, but it feels more like an unmitigated plea for sympathy.

Within the fatalistic nature of a noir, that works of course. It makes the film extra bitter, because Munsey's dictatorial, vile regime is also not to be sneezed at. Not entirely coincidentally a small underling, I suppose. Still, those backgrounds don't sit quite right. It's also a bit of a guess what Dassin is aiming for exactly. Often that the state hotel is a symbol for society.

But a POW camp or something like that would also be possible. There is something to be said for both. In any case, the doctor is the conscience of the film and he comes to life when the riffraff decides to make a bid for freedom, Munsey takes up the pipe and the violence or resistance begins. Dassin has a particularly strong final shot in store. And Lancaster. Impressive appearance. See that close-up.

A noir in a prison, then you don't expect a femme fatale and for once there aren't any. We get the usual intrigues of a prison film, indignant prisoners who take on a devilish warden. All prisoners are portrayed well here, they all have different personalities and for once I didn't find the flashbacks annoying (possibly also because they don't last that long). Quite clever to make an intimidating figure out of a Hume Cronyn, who usually doesn't look all that impressive. We also see Lancaster in one of his best roles here, silent and brooding.

Nice film about a prisoner who plans an escape together with his cellmates. The many side plots of the individual characters take the pace out of the film. The finale is also the best part of this prison film. The title covers the load there (certainly for a film from that time).
