Orson Welles teaches filmmaking. Difficult to choose whether 'Citizen Kane' or 'Touch Of Evil' is his masterpiece. The story of the latter is in any case a lot more compact than that of Kane, which benefits the immersiveness. Cinematographically, the highlight is the oft-reproduced and much-studied opening scene where the camera makes an unprecedentedly complex movement through a Mexican border town, while telling the premise of the story. Those three and a half minutes alone make 'Touch Of Evil' a masterpiece.

Sultry, sultry, mysterious atmosphere in this already quite hard film noir that clearly bears the Orson Welles stamp. Good and exciting intrigue, where every character wants to hide or keep something secret.

Welles's sloppy figure as the self-assured police chief, who always bends things to his will in that dark border town, (had to think of Philippe Noiret in "Coup de Torchon") is an attraction in the film, but that's actually Marlene Dietrich, surprisingly only in a supporting role. Charlton Heston, on the other hand, looks strange with his Mexican look (1 year later he would play Ben Hur !)

Saw the movie for the first time about 7 years ago. A second viewing yielded a bit more appreciation, but don't consider the film a masterpiece. Some scenes are quite wooden and the acting is not always up to standard.

Nice film that is also a bit dated, especially in the acting and mutual relationships that don't feel real but seem to be mostly scripted - at least, that's an image I have with films from before 1960 where it is always a good time with his all. It does not seem realistic that such a main character is so involved in a police case. But that was probably really that time, I just can't imagine it.

The directing is especially noteworthy. That first shot, but also many special camera angles, nice smooth editing sometimes and a lot of music for certain people. And visually it is quite beautiful with many deep black shadows and as a whole at times also really atmospheric, especially when some jazzy music is added. The film has really been thought through. It's a shame that the story itself isn't much, because that never really interested me. I don't think this is a film noir per se either, because there are too many elements missing for that, both in terms of content, visually and in terms of atmosphere. It is a thriller with a lot of dark photography, but no noir. The film never gets exciting, though it doesn't have to be. Top rounded 3.5*.
