Summer 1963. Daniel and Wilona Watson live with their three children, 15-year-old Byron, 11-year-old Kenny, and 8-year-old Joetta, in Flint, Michigan. Byron regularly causes trouble and when his actions go too far, his parents decide to travel with the whole family to Grandma Sands in Birmingham, Alabama for her down-to-earth advice and help. Once they arrive, they also meet Grandma's friend Mr. Robert, who shows them the town. There, the Watson family sees the polarization in society on race and civil rights, which drastically changes their lives.
