Stigmata plot

"The messenger must be silenced."

Priest Andrew Kiernan is sent by the Vatican to Brazil to investigate a blood-weeping statue of the Virgin Mary. Meanwhile, Frankie Page, a young atheist hairdresser, one day shows the signs of the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, for the first time. Priest Kiernan leaves for America to take care of the girl. At first he doubts the authenticity of the wounds as the stigmata never occur in non-believers. However, as the signs become more apparent, Kiernan realizes he is dealing with inexplicable forces that directly confront him with his faith.

Seen it once and then found it acceptable, and when I came across the film at the thrift store, the urge arose to watch the film again.

And the opening is right with 'the miracle' that Edward has to investigate in Brazil. The setting, the atmosphere with music, Stigmata makes a good impression in those first moments, after which they switch to Frankie. And there too, the film initially makes a strong impression with the first characteristics of the stigmata. Also interesting is the music with, among others, the name Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. And of course the cast that is quite good in the form of Byrne, in End of Days the devil himself, in an extremely solid role and Arquette is especially pleasing to the eye.

But then the draft comes in about half. The symptoms are slightly less strong and a bit melodramatic, just like the course afterwards and Frankie's explosion of violence, which adds little. I also find the scheming that arises with the leadership of the church all so so. It makes sense because it belongs in the plot with father Delmonico, but still. We know that the Catholic Church does not have clean hands in many areas.

Nevertheless, Stigmata is quite okay to see once, a film that certainly has its moments and the mistake that some believe with the mirror on the wall with the Armenian text just turns out to be no mistake. Because that mirror is just there, only on the side wall that is also fully painted. Well, nice for once.
