Their fascination with death and bullfighting creates a bond between the former matador Diego and the beautiful lawyer Maria. She takes on the defense of the young Angel, who is said to have committed a number of murders, but knows he is innocent because she committed some of these crimes herself during the lovemaking. Then she finds out that Diego has the same obsession...

The early films of Almodovar don't quite grab me yet, it's sometimes just a bit too strange for that and I don't always find the acting convincing in Matador. The story also comes across as a bit too forced at times and it all becomes somewhat predictable.
And yet it looks easy.

Pedro Almodóvar's better films date from the 1990s and later. I didn't really like this early movie. No doubt that's just me, probably because I despise bullfighting: the senseless killing of animals for the amusement of the masses. When that practice is transferred one-on-one to people out of an obsession with death, then I drop out; no matter how ingenious the story may be.

Leading the bull to death and ultimately killing it is an art, as the former matador Diego claims at the start of the film and this also appears to apply to humans. The opening montage with gruesome murders indicates that this will continue in this film.
Not my thing.
"An erotic, macabre fable", I read. Yes.
However, nothing wrong with the interpretations.
