Well, I've seen the extra long version and it's quite slow, yes. It tries to capture something of the 2001: A Space Odyssey atmosphere, but fails miserably due to the many nerdy hardcore space dialogues, which probably make sense somewhere, but fail to create an exciting atmosphere at all.

"Ironman, do you copy me?"

[pause]

"Ironman, do you copy me?"

[pause]

"Houston, I read you"

And so the bullshit continues throughout the film. Gregory Peck also does not seem to be suitable for a role as NASA chief. A bizarre point to pay attention to is when he walks around the NASA command center wearing such a safety helmet. Nice WTF moment :'). Visual effects and sets were nevertheless quite okay, but cannot save this particularly dry film.

Anyone who has seen 2001: A Space Oddissey may be surprised that a year later this film won an Oscar for best special effects. It says more about the quality of Kubrick's masterpiece than about this film, a somewhat slow, but reasonably entertaining drama in which three astronauts (Richard Crenna, Gene Hackman and James Franciscus) encounter technical problems during a space journey. Under the leadership of Gregory Peck, the home base begins a race against time to try to solve the problems so that the astronauts can return safely to Earth.

A strong cast, but the emphasis on authenticity and the static cinematography make this a long watch.

Very slow but quite fascinating drama about NASA's attempts to bring three astronauts, who are slowly running out of air, back to Earth. The special effects aren't much, especially considering the superior 2001: A Space Odyssey from the year before, but the excellent cast and the beautifully depicted concerns about mission control still lift this above mediocrity. The scene where Richard Crenna says goodbye to his wife is beautiful.
