Slow with a certain, uneasy, actionless tension. Not always clear and obvious. What is clear, and once again demonstrated with this film, is that during the war, the French police bravely helped to round up Jews.

According to the cover of my StudioCanal DVD, "the tone of the story evolves from Hitchcockian to Kafkaian", and so it is - from The wrong man to Der Prozeß, although Polanski's Le locataire (made in the same city in the same year) could also be a neighbor. Excellent performance by Delon and beautiful images, but anyone expecting a real war film here will probably be disappointed, even if there is enough commentary to be read between the lines on the French cooperation in the German Final Solution. The scenes of the Vel d'Hiv raid at the end will be more familiar to modern viewers from Elle s'appelait Sarah.

mr. Klein is an unsympathetic character. On the hood of the less fortunate Jews, he buys their art goods for next to nothing. His affairs are well organized and he takes little notice of the German occupiers or French collaborators. It certainly did him no harm with his beautiful building as a result.

Alain Delon plays a great character. Cold and impassive, inscrutable also with little empathy. As there may have been so many during the war, opportunists who, out of self-interest, try to get a piece of the pie from the others. His world is turned upside down when he is mistaken for a namesake.

His safe world suddenly becomes one of uncertainty. Like a cat in a corner, he tries to put the misunderstanding. He even tries to contact his namesake or his friends. Interesting here is that the attention for the character never disappears. The war and Nazism is just a backdrop to look at the character of Mr. Small not to lose.

Strong ending too, one that still got to me. Nice!
