Just a little too much for me.

Technically, there is little to complain about. It is all skilfully put together and it looks like a grandiose drama. But Davis pushes it way too far as far as I'm concerned and is way too concerned with playing on the mood, rather than letting the drama speak for itself.

The story is already larger than life anyway, if the film tries to be that then it quickly becomes banal melodrama. The first fifteen minutes there was at least some kind of balance, but once Saroo's train journey is over, things deteriorate very quickly with this film.

The part in Australia is not too good, Saroo's search for his parental home is just completely broke. Annoyingly sentimental, with thick music, always sad characters and a heaviness that the film absolutely cannot live up to.

Nah, not too good. Also curious about how they look at this film in India, because that country is really portrayed here as wedontgiveafuckistan.

1.5*

Beautiful film and a real tearjerker (I don't like to admit it, but I didn't keep it dry either). The first part in India looks beautiful because India is a colorful country and the story of little Saroo is intriguing. I think the second part is an elongated film version of Spoorloos and I found it less intriguing. And how he eventually still finds his birthplace is a bit unbelievable. The tears are effectively raised; somewhere in the middle there is an emotional climax with the jalebis and of course one more at the end.

Beautiful movie!

The film consists of two parts. In the first part we follow Saroo (very well played by Sunny Pawar), who gets lost and is eventually adopted by a childless couple from Australia. After a few small fragments of his life as a little boy there, it quickly switches to the second part of the film in which we follow Saroo on his quest for his past and his family left behind.

There is a chance that as a director you will soon choose the easy way, namely to turn it into a gigantic tearjerker. Although it is based on a true story, this is quite obvious, especially when children are involved. Davis knows how to bring some balance here by also bringing out the beautiful things and not just magnifying the misery.

There are also downsides, especially in the second part nothing much happens at a given moment, the momentum is taken out of the film.

Still, the acting is very good, the images beautiful (especially from India) and the story is movingly beautiful. Great movie!
