Quite dead.

My first full Antonioni. Had seen his fragment from Eros before, but that was a bit shabby. Still one of the reasons why I waited so long with it, also because Italian cinema usually interests me less, especially those classics are often trials.

The choice for black and white is incomprehensible, especially when you see that Antonioni makes an effort to occasionally show something beautiful on the screen. It's ugly and desolate. The beginning of the film undoubtedly provides a nice decor, but there is nothing to see. 50 shades of dull gray.

The fact that the story doesn't manage to captivate is mainly due to the acting. I sometimes suffer from that with old Italian films. Thick set, but in a strange wooden way. Likewise the dialogues, which sometimes hurt ears and eyes (because subtitles of course). It certainly doesn't help the drama.

For example, the dry style doesn't really come across and those 140 minutes are a serious torture.

1.0*

L'avventura may have been an adventure in the 1960s, but I still felt that Antonioni didn't offer much here with his film. Story itself is rather weak, romance too, but that seemed to me the intention. The man is a real player, we see how he starts with her girlfriend immediately after the disappearance. At the end of the film, he cheats on her again. Clearly a narcissist. Monica Vitti does have something, I find her an intriguing woman to watch. No, I expected more from this. The island itself did not immediately have a fascinating landscape. Basilluzo is the smallest of the 8 Aeolian Islands. I understand they needed something secluded. Lipari is a bit large but undoubtedly more interesting in terms of film location. It doesn't come across very well in black and white.
