Convincing acting, original setting and also a bizarre story. Denis Villeneuve has also long since proven to be an excellent director (and writer), so that's not a problem either. But somehow Incendies doesn't grab me. Can't really put my finger on the sore spot, but it looks like I'm not the only one here.

Very strong movie. Brilliant acting, excellent camera work, good story, good plot. The emotion from the film is perfectly conveyed. It is not a light-hearted story, but despite the fact that it is a heavy film and that a lot of misery passes in review, it never becomes too much of a good thing and it remains manageable. The choice to work with flashbacks works out well and the story is easy to follow. The atmosphere of the Middle East is also perfectly portrayed (you will recognize the atmosphere immediately if you have ever been there yourself). It is not a true story, but the story is based on a number of historical facts such as the attack on a bus in Beirut in 1975 and the main character is based on a Palestinian woman (Souha Bechara) who is a military commander in chief in South Lebanon. tried to kill and spent 10 years of her life in a small cell. A number of true ingredients, especially from the Lebanese civil war, have thus been brought together here and have led to the inspiration from which this film emerged. With regard to the coincidences spoken of by some, there are no coincidences that could not have happened in real life. And besides, that's probably why 'mystery' is also mentioned as a film genre. For me this was certainly not a mystery film and above all a beautiful drama / arthouse film that leaves a deep impression. 4.5 stars are well deserved.

Twins Jeanne [Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin] and Simon Marwan [Maxime Gaudette] are stunned when they read the will of their recently deceased mother Nawal [Lubna Azabal] that their supposedly dead father is still alive and that they have a brother. Moreover, the will stipulates that they deliver those letters personally. To do this, the brother and sister, who grew up in Canada, travel to the Middle East where they discover the life story of their mother during their search. And that's not all. Villeneuve prefers a visual storytelling style with a minimum of dialogue, despite it being based on a play (by Wajdi Mouaward) that was praised precisely for its poetic dialogues. It works and Villeneuve provides many moments that are hard to forget, even if the pace is a bit on the slow side.
