In a Lonely Place plot

"The Bogart suspense picture with the surprise finish!"

Scriptwriter Dixon Steele has the unpleasant task of scripting a mediocre 'bestseller'. He has Mildred Atkinson to tell him the story in her own words. Later that night, Mildred is murdered and Steele is the prime suspect. But luckily for him, his neighbor Laurel Gray gives him an alibi.

Biggest problem with this movie for me: they are actually constantly trying to create doubts about its innocence, despite all the frantic efforts it never succeeds convincingly, and the "surprising" ending can be seen coming very early. The rest of the story doesn't really matter.

“I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.”

One of Humphrey Bogart's best roles. In In a Lonely Place, he plays a character with a lot of problems and a very short fuse, and in the end he loses everything due to his suspicious nature and aggressive behavior. The great thing is that you don't find out what Dixon Steele went through and how he came to be, and that makes the character have something mysterious about them too.

Bogart is always great at playing these kinds of characters and one minute you hate him, the next you can laugh or feel sorry for him. The interplay with Gloria Grahame provides many highlights in the film, and their scenes are tragic, sometimes loving, but above all explosive. In a Lonely Place also has a murder plot, but the film is mainly a tragic love story and it shows that love doesn't conquer all.

The atmosphere is good, and the Bogart is back on track. Nevertheless, I find this film less than other Bogart or Film-Noir classics:
- I can only moderately appreciate the character Dixon Steele. I have a problem with his violent nature.
- The story isn't that interesting. Over time, the murder becomes an afterthought, becoming more of a Romantic drama. From then on, not much time is spent on clearing up the murder. At the end we are told that someone accidentally confessed... and that's what we have to do with that. So don't expect strong plot twists.
