Hector and the Search for Happiness plot

"Sometimes to find yourself you need to get a little lost."

Hector (Simon Pegg) is an eccentric but irresistible London psychiatrist in crisis. His patients don't seem to be getting any happier. Then one day, armed with great courage and an almost childlike curiosity, he breaks out of his sheltered habitat and embarks on a worldwide quest to find out if happiness really exists. More importantly, whether happiness exists for himself. And so he embarks on a colorful, exotic, dangerous and hysterical journey.

Despite the varied story and a top line-up, a disappointment. Protagonist Simon Pegg lacks charisma and the roles of the other stars are not much more than some bloated cameos. Definitely not a movie that makes you very "happy".

A sweet and friendly film with a nice premise, a sympathetic protagonist and several top-heavy supporting actors who really have little to do, although Stellan Skarsgård impresses with his banker who has seen it all (and "our" Barry Atsma also puts a very credible role). I think the African episode is a miss; I understand that in addition to the sweet, Hector also has to experience the sour, but the horrific reality of that kidnap falls completely outside the film in terms of tone, and our hero also steps over that experience very smoothly.
And what lesson did Hector and the viewer ultimately learn, or should I have paid more attention to all those intertitles? Well, the road is more important than the destination shall we say, and if they had served morality on a silver platter it would probably have been an even bigger turn off. Or perhaps we should pay attention to that thin line between the clichés ("People who are afraid of death are afraid of life") and the truths ("We should concern ourselves not so much with the pursuit of happiness but with the happiness of pursuit "—a statement that's also just popped into the trailer for convenience), and it's up to the viewer to judge where one ends and another begins. In short, after the first time I was very disappointed, but after reviewing I am starting to fall under the abbreviation of this film, even if it is all a bit light and non-committal - and perhaps that is precisely the life lesson of this film .

Nice film and certainly an addition to the film world. Only the life lessons get a little annoying at the end.
